My RM-Z made some noise like that once when it was low on oil. From that point on I always checked my oil before every ride. Every 4-6 hrs I change my oil, which is aprox. 2 rides, but I always check it between rides and it always needs some. Ive been using synthetic motor oil and changing my air filter with every oil change. As long as I keep my oil level proper I never hear that noise. I dont know what it is but it does kinda sound like a fan belt locking up. I always make sure my bike is a couple of ounces over cause of the oil consumption, it has used this amount of oil from day 1.

Lack of lube is what it sounds like; a bearing in the engine or tranny running dry, or even possibly something like a cam journal in the top end. Hopefully there wasn't too much damage done. As stated here already, your bike requires frequent oil changes and service. Make sure you keep the oil topped off between changes too, as MX four strokes don't carry much oil to start with.

My son managed to run his bke out of oil (05 rmz450) and froze the engine. What is the common failure point on these bikes? Maybe next time he will pay attention to maintence
