My son is getting a new bike soon and I can't decide on which one. Your input will be helpful. CRF50/PW50 1. 104lbs/84lbs 2. 4-stroke/2-stroke 3. Chain/Shaft 4. 3-Speed/Auto 5. $999.00/$999.00 The seat height on the Yamaha is about 2" shorter...better for little guys. Last edited by Shifting; 04-07-2004 at 12:46 AM.

I gotta agree with Fuzzy. Is this his first bike? How old is he? That is true about the CRF50 seat height...that was a big reason we bought a JR50, it is nice and small/short.

Shifting: Just choose a color and let him ride (kidding) I put alot of thought into my son's first bike, and here is what I concluded: 1. CRF50 (XR50) is fourstroke, time-honored, bullet-proof. 2. I didn't like the higher seat on the Honda initially, but then again, he can ride it a little longer. 3. I own a CRF--like father like son (I am my son's hero 4. Resale value & popularity. Adults buy those CRF50s and trick them out. I have yet to see an adult on other minis. 5. Aesthetics. Touchy subject on ATM, so I will speak with key words in code. Dark Blue. Scratches. Ratty. Red. Scratches. Pleasant. 6. No Two-Stroke Oil Needed. I am getting a little punchy here so I am going to sleep.

or you could be different and hook him up with a zuki as mentioned earlier. i would go with the crf50 simply because of resale. when he gets a tad bit taller, you can slap on some fast 50 bars and it will fit him another few months. then you can sell it for a hefty sum to some hardcore metal mulisha freestyler kid so he can slap on teh black plastics and look cool

Well I'm a die-hard Honda fan, however if I remember right, the PW50 has shaft drive. That is a big time safety feature for a beginning little rider. Both of these bikes are bullet proof if you take a little care of them. Either choice is good.

PW50 is far from bullit proof in my opinion...especially in comparison to the Honda motor. i would definately get him the CRF50. It will last a lot longer and he will learn the concept of shifting. It has a higher resale. And if you wanted you could ride it yourself as a pitbike. For me it would be a hands down choice.

Ryan, You're on crack if you think you're getting the PW. C'mon, your kid is plenty big for the CRF50 and he's so dang smart he taught you how to shift gears.

ok I would like to chirp in on the pw50 vs xr50 bulletproof...ness.. dude, I own a 1982 (same age as me) qt50 which uses the same motor as the pw50. I got this bike when I was around 13 drug out of someones lawn sitting out for 5 years. Rode it as a dirtbike for 2 years.. beat the living...frickin..crap out of it. sat outside/ in the junk garage for 5 years or so. Dug it out agian and used it agian as a pitbike... beating the livinig.. frickin.. crap out of it. got it road legal.. and it has now been my PRIMARY source of transportation for 3 years.. and still is TO THIS DAY with ZERO major problems except running out of gas a few times and getting a flat once, and I do not treat it too nice! .. I STILL take it on seasonal back roads where my ttr would ..well.. make sure its in 1st. Absolutley indestructible most reliable machine I have ever seen or ever will see. unstoppable. just thought id mention that. heres a pretty pic! http://wm21.inbox.com/thumbs/a_46ea0...1_oJ.jpg.thumb

My son is 3 and rides a crf50 with training wheels now. He loves it but is unable to shift yet. We just give him second gear and let him go! I'm actually looking for a pw50 he can start racing next year though. That's another thing to consider- Are you going to get into racing? Most tracks have seperate brackets for the little guys on pws and xrs vs. crfs etc. To me it comes down to size, if you're child is getting into it between ages 3-5 and may be racing go with the PW. If he's over 6 or not interested in racing- get the crf! Either way, they are both dependable and rugged little bikes that hold their resale value very well. Oh one more thing to consider is the fact that any PW made after 2002 will have a red sticker... I don't think they've changed in 20 years though so there's nothing wrong with picking up a good pre 2003 bike. Whatever you decide, have fun! -Shellback Last edited by Shellback; 11-12-2008 at 12:52 PM. Reason: typo
