We think Anna is ready to move up from her ttr90. She's not been riding it all that long, but she's already beating the suspension up. Not that she's catching major air or anything, just that the stock suspension on the ttr pretty much sucks. It's to the point where Anna is asking to move to something different. She tried out Corbin's kx65 a couple weeks ago and figured out starting and stopping with the clutch fairly quickly. Of course, she bogged her way around the track, but did alright. So...all that background for this. What bike is next? I'm thinking the kx65 or rm65 might be a bit small for her, but an 85 is definitely too big. And, neither do I feel comfortable putting her on a bike that big. I've found an '03 kx65 locally that they're asking $700 obo for. The ad is pretty vague... new grips, runs great, daughter's bike. We're supposed to look at it this weekend, so I guess we'll see. I know we can switch out the springs in the ttr, but I'm not sure we want to put the money into it? Suggestions or comments are gladly welcomed.

What about a TTR-125? I think a 65 is going to be too small, and if not, she will outgrow it really fast. Has she sat on a TTR-125? Is it too big?

To be honest Ty, I didn't even think of going the ttr125 route. She hasn't sat on one, but I can sure find one for her to sit on. I guess I should check into them, seems like it might be a bit heavy for her though?

I like the Idea of a 65. I think the transition would be much easier. When tracys lil bro went from 50s to 65s the bike fit like a glove. I would expect her to grow out of the 65 in a year

I would expect her to grow out of the 65 fairly quickly too. Just as she did with the ttr90. I just hate to put her on something that's too big/powerful for her, I think I'd rather have her ride something that's a bit small. I checked and the seat height of the ttr 125 is only a half inch taller than a 65, but it weighs almost 50 pounds more.

You can definitely modify the 65 to her liking, suspension, taller seat, taller bars, possibly bigger tires.............. there's a lot you can do to it.

You also need to look at her progression rate and aggression. The ttr would be a slower longer lasting bike but if she is aggressive then the 65 is the way to go imho.

Char, I'd consider a KLX110. They are bigger but not as big. Do you thing the zing/zip of a little 2 stroke would scare her away from riding?

the 110 is only about an inch taller, has the same amount of suspension, same 3 speed auto clutch type tranny, and about the same power- the biggest difference between the two is the color really the 65 seems like the natural step IMO

For the price, you could spend some money on the 65 to make it work better for her. Only thing is the re-sale of the TTR will be higher, whether that is a worry or not...

The way she looks on a bike I would go with the 65. We were so happy to see JJ when he jumped from his XR80 to the KTM85. We did not know it but the XR80 was really holding back what he could do. Also, JJ will be out of his 85 soon so let us know when she is at that point. It's in great condition.

I think trying to find a bike for someone that age that they are not going to outgrow in a year is one of motorcycling's biggest challenges. It is like clothing. You just can't get a good fit this year and next year. I think from a dollar standpoint, selling the 90 or passing it down now is probably a good idea. You wont have all that much in the 65 and they resell pretty well too, especially if you keep them sharp. I would say get the 65and see how that goes in a year. Gene's 8 year old grandson has one and it works really well for a medium agressive type. He was on a pw50 the year before that. This will be his second summer on the 65.

I appreciate everyone's input. Woody, I don't think the 2-t will scare her off, especially after riding Corbin's bike. She seemed to like it. I will admit one of the biggest reasons for considering the 65 is the cost. If I can get her on a different bike for $700 or less, I'd be one happy camper. I expect that's about all we'll get out of the ttr, so it'd be an even trade. And then...when she's ready and grows a bit more, we can buy JJ's bike.

hello i started my son at age 9 on the ttr 90, great starter bike with a 50 plus top end. at 12 he had enough exp. to move up, so i got him a crf 150, that was a good jump and he has mastered the clutch now and in another yr. or so maybe honda will come out with a crf 230 R , i have taken things slow with my son we are not in any kind of competition riding it all depends on how deep your pockets are and the right fit , my daughter is 6 and one day she will take over the 90
