readme My boy's first wreck!

A proud moment that I thought I would share with you all......

As some may remember, we are new at this and it is his first time on a bike. I put the training wheels on so he won't have to worry about the balance issue. I want him to concentrate on throttle control, shifting, and control stops. We set out to my parent's house this morning because they have 10 wide open acres for him to run on. I let him put around in first and he had fun. Jumped him up to second, and he was screaming "yaaahhoooooo" as he sped passed me. Did very well on the throttle and braking was excellent. We took a lunch break and he wanted back after it.

He jumped on and rode around in second. Decided to give him a taste of third and he was wide open with it out in the field. Turned around and got on it hard again coming right back at me. Gave him the brake sign and there was no braking. He decided to shoot the gap in the fence that he had already negotiated many times earlier in the day in the lower gears. He backed off the throttle a little but was still going a pretty good clip. The left training wheel caught the fence post and that was all she wrote. The bike flipped and he went over the handle bars doing a flip and landing on his stomach. Grandpa and Nana run out making a big deal out of it. I walk up as he is collecting himself off the ground brushing the dirt off and holding his wrist. He is whimpering a bit about it and I congratulate him on an awesome first wreck.

He kinda looked puzzled at me. I told him I was proud of him getting off the ground and brushing himself off. I gave him a once over and he had a couple of abrasions but that is it. He said he was more scared than hurt and proceeded to tell me it was my fault because he was in third. I told him he wasn't complaining when he rode past me and he then started to smile. He tried that whole play pout/mad thing that kids do, but he couldn't hold back that smile.

We discussed the importance of the safety gear that he had on and pointed out the scratch on his helmet and other gear and explained the possible injuries he may have had if not wearing it. All in all it was a good day of learning for his first full day of riding. He tells he now that he is only gonna run third on the track when he gets to race. Lord help me.....he is gonna be hell on wheels.

Happy Easter to everyone!

Slainte,
Chris

I'll try to get out there later in the week and take some pics. I was really surprised by his reaction. I thought for sure he didn't want anything to do with it after that.

I was going to post a pic of the training wheels to show the nice bend in them, but, I guess I can't post pictures in the message. Sorry.

Anyway, I'm glad he came through it okay, with only his ego really hurt.

Slainte,
Chris

At least you captured the pic. No matter how old she is, it will be pulled out and laughed at for the rest of her life.
