Last year my son bought a 2003 KX65. It's been an awesome bike so far. Well, this year, for some reason the front of the silencer is making an awful mess all over the swing arm and tire. We are currently running AMSOil Dominator @ 60:1, which should be fine since he ride very cautiously (that's the nice way of saying.. slow I know I need to take a closer look at the junction between the silencer and pipe to see why it's leaking all over there, but what if anything can I do to clean this up? It's really making a mess. ---------- Post added at 11:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:43 PM ---------- Also, is it maybe possible that the pipe might be loaded with premix spoog? I took the bike for a ride the other night and after I rode it it seemed to clean up, so maybe the problem is my sons riding style... Maybe a hotter plug? -- though it doesn't foul plugs at all. I'm pretty new to this 2-stroke stuff, so any help there would be appreciated.

I believe spooge is caused by rich jetting. Your son's riding style might make matters worse. It's not uncommon for a bike to be too rich on the pilot jet or slide needle. Of course once the silencer is full of spooge, it will need repacked to stop the leakage.

I would even go through cleaning the pipe out. I used to burn my carbon out of the pipe, I know its not the safest idea but it gets it all out and clean. Clean and reseal the exhaust with high temp silicon to stop the spooge. Riding a bike at lower RPM's (2 stroke) will really cause carbon to build up, foul spark plugs, and ruin exhaust packing. Just simple 2 stroke maint. should do the trick! All good advice so far.

I agree with SikspakD, clean everything out and re-seal. Do a repack on the silencer as well. I know you will get tons of varied oppinions on this but I would revisit your mix ratio and jetting combination. Even though you are running a very good oil, 60:1 on a little screamer seems lean. We ran 40:1 with a good synthetic in our kx65 for four seasons, no spooge, very little smoke and always ran crisp, not a lick of trouble. My daughter rode very convervatively like your son. Spend some time jetting it correctly and you will solve spooge issues and the bike will just run better which will also make it easier to ride and in the end make him more comfortable and a better rider. The more time he spends riding will increase his confidence and he'll be in that powerband constantly! Good luck.

| Thank you everyone for you opinions. They are very helpful. Quote:
I'll get some hi temp silicon and re-pack and re-seal everything. I won't do any of that until I get the jetting sorted though. Thanks again for the help. |

The high temp silicone is usually orange RTV stuff. It stinks real bad, so make sure you open the garage to ventilate. I used to pour a few ounces of gasoline in the expansion chamber, and light it on fire. It is not safe like I have said, but works. Have a hose nearby. Jetting can be a pain, read up on it and it should make life easier.

The exhaust when off the bike isn't sealed. That is what I was talking about, not on the bike! Anyways, don't use this method it is too dangerous. It is not safe to do, a parts washer and a little time would probably do the same. Keep in mind I have not done that since I was young, it was something someone showed me. I don't expect someone to light gasoline on fire. It ignites way too quickly and is too dangerous to use. This is an old school trick, like cleaning with gasoline ( air filters) it works, but isn't safe to use.

Just an update. I didn't remember it was RTV, but I did get some black Hi-Temp silicone (500 degree) and have fixed the leak. Thank you for the help. I also got to see the status of the packing, which was in good shape. The owner of the bike said he re-packed it, which he did -- what he didn't tell me was that he didn't know how to get the thing apart... He used a screw driver to pry it open, which really made the beginning side of the silencer loose as a goose. So it needed a good amount of silicone to get it sealed up. We also got the stock silencer with the bike and while I was at it I thought I'd tear it apart to have a look... WOW what a mess. The packing was the stock packing and it was hard as a ROCK and black as night -- heavy too. We dug and pry'd for an hour or so before getting the old stuff off. Then I had to use a torch to clean up the baffle since it was pretty nasty too. Then I got an idea. Anyway, I re-packed it, put it back together and we've been using it instead of the FMF with sparky and I love the sound. I think it's actually quieter than the FMF (can't remember which one it is). So where do you get that trick factory packing with the steel wool looking material? Is that even needed? I'm sure it's got to be better, but probably not needed. Anyway, thanks for all of your help. The bike has never ran this good before. It didn't run bad before, but it's super crisp now and seems to burn cleaner.

FYI - A very clean expansion chamber always performs better. All two-stroke engines, regardless of tune will buildup some degree of residue/carbon over time. I have always cleaned the inside of my pipes frequently. A good method is to pour in some kind of solvent, then drop in some nuts, bolts, washers, or something similar. I sometimes use a few short pieces of chain. Then, shake the heck out of it for a while while rotating all directions. drain out and flush with fresh solvent. Repeat this until no more crud comes out, then hang and let dry. Never use water to rinse as it will cause the inside of the pipe to rust and forever decrease the efficiancy of the pipe. You will be amazed at how well your bike peforms after you perform this very important service.
