fordmugg, don't believe that the YZ is slow. The stock exhaust chokes it up a bit, but by replacing it with a quality aftermarket exhaust the bike will rip.
I'm a Yamaha guy by nature and love my YZ's but the CRF's are good bikes also. I spent some time a few years back riding with a guy who had an 06 CRF (my YZ is an 06 also) and there is very little difference between the two... his motor had a different sound to it but other than that I couldn't tell much difference. I have also ridden a couple 04's and they were nice too... hard to tell much of a difference. If you are shopping used, it all comes down to getting the most for your $ and making sure you don't buy something that is loaded with problems. Me, I'd go for the YZ!
PS- I moved your thread to the "which bike" forum so hopefully you'll get more responses

The Honda isn't as reliable???

I can't say for sure because I've never owned anything in the 450 range... but I do know growing up and even present day that I have abused Honda's and its amazing how much they will take and still keep going.

I'm a huge fan of the XR series and it would be nothing short of a miracle for anyone to convince me otherwise (not talking speed, etc... just talking reliable).

I recommend the Honda.

Intake valve issues on the CRF 450 and 250 are not at all unheard of. These aren't XR's in any way, shape, or form.

Not to mention - a slow YZ450F will still have 30% more power than you will likely be able use unless you are racing Pro Nationals.

I love the YZs, but then again - I am a Yami guy.

I just baught the 09 yz450f in july and i have to say i love the thing. I was in the same boat i was going between a 08 crf 450 (wont even think about getting the 09 crf450) and the 09 YZ450 i think i made the right choice by going with the yz450f. It might have less power then the rest but some how i still beat all my friends.... hmmmm maybe there is more to it then just the bike
