Default hmm what size bike

hey guys im looking to buy my nine yr old son a bike and get him started riding for his bday but not to sure what size I should go with. he has been hounding me for awhile now to get him one so why not right. any way been going back and forth between a 50cc or a 70cc. not sure don't want to get him one that will scare him but also don't want to get one that he will out grow to fast although I do have 3 boys so it wouldn't really be a bad thing if he outgrew it fast could just pass it down I suppose. but any response would be helpful. thanks again

bobby

if he is a normal sized 9 year old he will do fine on the crf80 (xr80), the tt90, or the suzuki/kaws of the same size. to be kind, dont take him to a shop to look at the new ones if you are going to buy used. if he is on the tall side the xr100/crf100 will work fine for him and last at least a before he feels stifled by the performance. if you want to consider a two stroke, the kx65 would work for him too. another step up are the small wheel ttr125's. lots of very good choices between the red and the blue.

once the guys get to be about 5' they start feeling the xr/crf 100 sized bikes are too small for them. if they have friends that race they feel outgunned faster. dont worry about that until either you decide to let him enter competition, or he starts over riding what he has to the point he is bending it without crashing.

thanks for the input I was also lookin online at them cheap china bikes you can get for next to nothing does anybody know that much about them or would I be better off just sticking to the good names. my buddy had got one of them cheap ones from somebody and its a little 70 that would damn near outrun his wifes crf100. just keeping my options open since what ever I end up getting him I would like it to maybe last till my youngest that just turned two can learn to ride on it. that way I wouldn't have to buy each a bike when they get big enough. that and the way everybody has those used bikes priced here in Oregon area its insane. was at the Honda dealer lookin at a used 70 and they wanted bout a grand for it.

I can sure see the draw to the Chinese bikes. No one I know has much luck with thèm. The engines are all well designed since they are copies. It seems like everything else breaks, bends, or falls off. Then you can't get those parts. All the little yamaha s and Hondas last through multiple kids.
