ok here goes. im 29 5'8 170lbs. i have no experience riding dirtbikes. i have been riding a yamaha r6 for the last 3 years. i found a dirt track 10 miles from my house so i really want to get a dirtbike now. do you think a 125 2 stroke would be a bad idea since i have no dirt experience? is a crf150 to small for me ?

I think a TT-R230 would be a good starter bike. As long as you dont plan on racing motocross right away you would be fine. You could start out on a 125 and you would be fine once you learn how to keep the engine in it's powerband. I would think though that if you can handle an R6 you could probably handle just about any dirtbike.

What's your favorite color? =D Basically, everyone will give you their favorite brand. Imo, I'd go with a RM125, just because that's what I have. Other people will tell you Yamaha because that's what they prefer, others will go Kawa, and some will go Honda. My first bike is this RM125, and it has a ton of kick. A 125 is a good starting bike, it teaches you how to actually run the bike instead of letting the bike run you.

so a 2 stroke is ok for a beginner? i thought a 250f would be easier to ride.

Since you have street bike experience, you should be fine on a 2 stroke. I had never riden a dirt bike prior to my RM125 and I started out fine on it.

A CRF150R is pretty dang small for your frame. However, your post brings up a serious question. You are not original in beginning MX as an adult. Many of us have. The cost of a bike is often the determining factor for many buyers. Whatever you decide upon for your initial bike, it will most likely be a short term deal. You will want to progress to the next level as soon as your skill permits. A 125 will be cheaper and will teach you throttle control. A 250 four stroke will be easier to ride as you learn. If you are patient and have the money to spend, I'd say you should go with a 250 four stroke. You will probably be able to stay with that bike longer and learn more for less money. There are infinite levels of learning in MX. It's just how it is.

from what i've seen, most people will say a two stroke 125 is the way to go because it teaches you to ride the real way, but lets face it, its a four stroke world and its never going back. i've seen some small guys start riding 250f's for their first bikes and they have done just fine, plus as you get better the bike will still be competitive and more than enough for your skill, just my opinion

Ha thats what i was thinking. If your used to the R6 power you would get bored on a dirt bike. Might as well go for the king.........jk It also depends what your budget is?

Get a yz125. They're really easy to learn motocross on im sure you won't get bored on it. I've had mine for 3 years. If you start on a 125 you'll find it easier to make the step to a 250F. A crf150 is to small for you. Get a 125, they're cheap to maintain, they're reliable, and they're easy to learn the mechanics of a dirtbike. If cost is an issue a 125 is definately the way to go.
