hey guys looking to buy my first bike. My friend from school built a track at his house with 15 ft ramps and smaller and hes also talked me into buying a dirt bike. Ill be riding trails and racing on his track to practice bnecause he wants me to get good and race with him in the city. Hs already told me get a four stroke but which? I want a bike that like never breaks down cause i wont know how to fix it for awhile and also just a good all around bike. thnks

For your first bike I would recommend a 2 stroke, cause you WILL be having to fix it, and 2t's are easier to work on. How big are you and what do you weigh?

How much are you looking to spend? That'll probably go a long ways towards what you buy.

Since you dont really know all that much about engines it sounds like....I suggest you get a four stroke for a couple reasons. #1 If you plan to race the bike makers are putting a lot of time and engineering into the four strokes right now , and that will ensure you have a top notch competetor. #2reason is because although 2 strokes are much less complicated, they are a very odd engine compared to the good ol' four strokes. This would give you a better chance to really under stand how it works before you try to understand how a 2 stroke works. Now understand that 4 strokes require quite a bit of anal maintenance to keep them top noth compared to the 2 strokes, and also the 2 strokes are said to be a better bike to learn on because they are harder to control compared to the double pumping brother(4 stroke).

2 stroke... odd? No...? A 2 stroke is a VERY simple design, it is FAR from odd. |

I did saythat it is simple, but the way the fuel enters the ungine and exits is very odd compared to every other type of internal combustion engine. Also understanding how you get four strokes(suck, squish, bang, blow) into 2 strokes is odd also. I love 2 strokes and dont ever plan on buying a four stroke, so this isn't some sort of bias answer.

Sure, thumpers might last longer, however when you do have to rebuild part of it, it will cost you much more than a 2-stroke, as well as much more time. From the way it sounds, you're still in high school. If your school offers it, I'd definitely consider taking a Small Engines class or something of that sort. |

CR500R Honestly, A 250F might be a bit much. Maybe a 125 with a 144 kit?

Bike that never breaks down? Hmmm. I would say XR400. Those things will run forever.

So then is a KX250F a good bike for me being 5'8" and im still gonna grow, my friends like3-4" taller and rides a 250 and he says ill be fine.

All of the newer four stroke race bikes like the KX250F require A LOT of maintenance and it's not cheap. Having said that, it will be fine for you, size-wise.
