| Maybe you should get a 230. On second thought, get the CR500 |

| for 1500 dollars your choice for a reliable motocross bike is limited: 125 or possibly 250 2 stroke. get as new of one as you can find for the money and take time to find one that is extra clean. if its a 125 get one with a six speed. at the beginner level, a 125 will keep up with a 250f. |

The other way around, 4 strokes can start off the line in 2nd where starting a 2stroke off the line and having power in 2nd isn't happening. Once they're both going tho they will run togeather around the track as long as both riders are about the same as far as riding skill. Same problem I have with my friends, my '01 CR250 will outrun my friends '05 CRF450 once were going, but off the line he'll beat me every single time simply because he can start off in 2nd and still have plenty of power for fast acceleration. |

if it were me in your situation i'd stick to: '03 and up kx125 1998-2001 or '05 and up yz125 '01 and up rm125 if you could save up another grand or so: '03 and up yz250f '04-05 crf250 if you do buy 4 stroke be extra careful to find one that hasn't been ragged out already Last edited by the_privateer; 04-28-2008 at 11:24 PM. |

| DEFINETELY DO NOT BUY A 250F . Its not the right bike for a begginer. Buy a crf150r big wheel. BEcause you will not be able to handle a 250f PERIOD! When you watch your friend. Its alot harder than it looks. SO take it slow. Ride your budys bike you will see what i mean. maybe get a 125 2 stroke. They are alot slower than a 250f at your level. Good luck.( BTW it takes a while to get good at this sport. ) |

| The 2-stroke motor is not odd it's about as simple as it gets. As far as learning to work on and understanding how a 4t or 2t works..hands down 2t is way easier. I have raced/ridden and worked on both. Right now I'm almost ready to give my wife's CRF away cause I'm sick and tired of draining my wallet on maintenance and repairs. Both bikes have different power characteristics that require a different style of riding. We can go round and round about what's better 2t or 4t but here's the thing...I have beaten cr500's KTM525's and YZ250's and CRF450's but on the other end of the spectrum I have been eaten alive by a little snot on an 85...Just a few months ago at the Rovers race Justin Imhoff smoked 155 people for 3 place OA...on a 125. What does that tell you...ITS THE RIDER NOT THE BIKE! So here's something to think about. Everyone is going to come up with opinions that are so far fetched that I almost just threw up while reading them or close to the truth. The best thing to do is try riding a friends bike and come up with your own conclusion. If you are worried about working on bikes and learning the mechanics of the motor then IMO a 125 would be a great beginner bike. Easy to work on and with the right help (IE: Books, friends, mechanics ETC ETC) would be a great race bike. If your sending your motor to a shop and not worried about the cost then a 4t will be just fine. Weather its a 2t or 4t it takes seat time, testing, trial and error and patience to build a bike (motor, suspension controls etc etc) that is suited for your style and skill so it will not be an overnight thing. Good luck with your decision. -Kevin- |
