Default Cr250 or 4 stroke?

Hey everyone, This is my 1st post here. I found this site while searching for cr250 info. Here's my situation, Tell me what you think. I recently bought my sons' dirt bikes. my 7 year old has a ktm mini adventure and my 12 year old has a ttr 125. I myself have a suzuki lt250r quad. I recently threw the quad on craigslist thinking i'd sell and buy a dirtbike to ride with my boys. I got a guy who wants to trade a '97 CR250 for my quad. My questions are. 1) Do I need a bike like that if I'll just be trail riding and maybe a little jumping etc. 2) is a 250 big enough for a 250 lb guy that's 6'1". 3) would I be better off with a 4 stroke. 4) is a cr a high mantenence bike, what should I look for?
Thanks in advance for any advice

the cr 250 would be a good choice, it just depends on ur ridind style. i have ridden both 2stroke and 4 stroke. i presonally like the 4 stroke but their a little higher maintence. but if u dont maintain a 2 stroke that leads to disaster also. it sounds like a nice trade to me. one more thing if u get a 4 stroke get a honda or a yamaha. im sure someone else will give so advise also. good luck

I went from a built Honda TRX450R quad to a 99 CR250 and I love it! I've ridden 4 stroke bikes, but I'm so used to the CR250 that I have a hard time thinking about changing to a 4 stroke.

The CR has been very reliable and last time I changed the piston (not sure on the hours since I bought it used, but I added 40 to it), the piston still measured within tolerance and looked good and the ring gap was just slightly out of tolerance. I did a light scuffing of the cylinder, cleaned the power valve and put in a piston kit and have put over 60 hours on it and the compression has only dropped about 7 PSI since break-in. I do plan on tearing it down within a couple months, but I'm happy as can be with it.

A couple things I would recommend for trail riding though. First, make sure your fuel/air mixture is spot on or very close to it. Second, put on a flywheel weight. The weight helps keep it from stalling in the technical stuff, but you still get most of the quick rev of the 2 stroke.

For trail riding you will want to go with a four stroke ecause the are easier to ride in the tight technical stuff, ALOT easier to manage the power.

Them two bike are nothing compared to a mx 4stroke.mx 4strokes are anything but smooth, those two bikes might aswell have no tourque and acceleration.a 250 or 450 mx bike will flat out stomp a trail bike of anykind.Thats like this kid at croom that always compares my sx-f to his xr250,he thinks he has more acceleration and topend.

Very nice! I still love the quad, but it's rare that I'd rather ride it than the CR250.

Nice looking bike. Did he put the numbers on for looks or did he race?
Might want to check the compression and see if the top end needs anything.
Easy to work on, have fun, be carefull. The cr does have a punch in the mid range.
