Default 2008 CRF-150R/Expert or 2008 YZ-125

For a friend that want to learn how to ride, he's 5'7 and around 175lbs.

I suggested these bikes for easier resell just incase and to keep the price around $5K

It has to be Honda or Yamaha, because he has store credit.

What do you guys think?

I think the 150R would be a blast to ride!

I've not heard much in the way of reliability when it comes to them though?

I'd love an '08 yz125 though...light and flickable, I would imagine great power. It would teach him alot in the way of throttle and/or clutch control.

I personally think the 150R would be better for a "first" bike. We have a couple of them that we watch in our races. Haven't heard any complaints at all and they are a tad tamer than a 125. Still full of power, though!

I agree the power would be more manageable on the 150R, especially for a first time rider. But, he would quickly outgrow it~and @ 5'-7" I'm not so sure if the ergo's are good to start with.

Looking at the money he'll be dropping (new bike), he's going to want to hang on to it awhile or lose some cash. He'll have to use restraint, but I say the 125 hands down

I would recommend the 125.

Cheaper to maintain and mod and allows more room to grow.

It will give him a good base of riding skillz to start with and it's a full size bike so the power shouldn't be too much but still be big enough to spend as long as he wants riding it!
