Ok, just some basic advice on a hare scramble.

Pace yourself. Don't start out running and gunning. If someone is gung-ho about getting around you in that 3rd or 4th turn, let 'em. It's a long race and you need some sprint left in you at the end.

Buy a Camelback. It will save you precious time during the race. No need to stop for a few gulps of liquid when you can just put the mouthpiece in and take a few sips from time to time.

Breathe. I read an interview by Taddy Blazusiak once where he described the need to breathe as "almost yawning". When you are coming up to a difficult section, start your breathing ahead of time. Open your mouth wide, inhale and exhale deeply. This will help you more than you think. Oxygen MUST get to those muscles.

Hydration. Hydrate yourself several days before the race.

Have fun. Racing is just plain fun! Don't get caught up in winning. Especially your first race. Take whatever place you can grab and just enjoy the race lap by lap. Bench racing with those you did battle with is almost more fun than the race itself.
