If Im not mistaken the mineral oil is called for in the clutch reservoir since its a hydraulic clutch, not in the case. But what do I know, I slept on a lumpy bed last night.

I'm with Doc. I don't know much about KTM's but they do have hydraulic clutches. I wouldn't substitute. Use mineral oil.

If you are referring to the motor oil you are using in the tranny, just make sure it is non energy conserving. EC oil contains friction modifiers that will cause clutch issues. Look at the circular API label on the bottle, the lower half should be blank. If the lower half says "energy conserving" don't use it in your bike.

Thumbs up Re: KTM 450 SXF!!!! ??????????

It seems I am one of the only guys that knows much about the ktmsJK.You put motor oil in your clutch resevoir??The mineral oil is only for the clutch and dont use anything but the stuff from your dealer as it is not mineral oil but a synthetic hydraulic fluid specificly for hydraulic cutches. With the 450sx-f you want to run the thickest synthetic possible In the motor so as it wont break down in the serious heat that these 450's put out, especially in australia.DO NOT use motor oil in your clutch!!I have never put motor oil in my clutch but the dealers say that you can seriously hurt your hydraulic clutch if you use the wrong fluid.Put the right stuff in and make sure your clutch still works. If not then you may have to have it rebuilt, just got my 125sx clutch rebuilt after four years so they last a good long time.Make sure it is jetted correctly to,this is the leading cause for ktm's over heating,as well as having the right coolant level and oil hieght. If all this is correct you will have perfect idle, crisper throttle and better cooling.

Glad you made the switch to the ktm hope you enjoy that 450sx-f theyre a rocket

Default I am a long time 450sx rider!

Hello, I am a long time lover of my 450 sx. The mineral oil is for the clutch resevoir only. DOT 4 for the brake resevoir and I run Thumper 4 stroke 20w50 oil faithfully after having problems with other oils including synthetics for cars.
I change the oil twice to every filter change to save money on filter and I find they aren't dirty enough even on the second change...but you can never be too careful of your pocket. Take good care of the fluids and the KTM will last a long time. Mine is a 2003 with almost(notice I said almost) no problems since new. I raced it for two seasons in intermediate class, then retired to just riding a practice track and sandpits for fun since. I LOVE THE BIKE, just wish I had the electric start though. ENJOY!!!
