Default Racing The Chick Class AT GMB IV

I first got the idea at the GMB IV Planning Meeting back in March. I loved riding with Char and helping her double the triple step up. I've had the wig sitting in a box for around 15 years. I dressed up as a Cheerleader one Halloween and have never used it since. It was the only decent wig I could find on short notice and it cost me about $75. It was labeled "platinum blonde". I made sure I caught Vintage Dave in the scoring tower to clear my "chick class" entry with the ladies up there Sunday morning. Their main question was "Why are you doing this?" They didn't have much of a sense of humor. I told very few people what I was doing. Machoman was one of them. Since he had gotten hurt and wasn't riding I wanted him to be "in the know". He suggested that I ride his bike but I just blew it off and went on. After I thought about it a bit, I realized riding his bike would be an honor and it would also get his bike out on the track for GMB IV. I went back to him and got the final OK. The chick class was race #7 just after I had run the ATM/TT race at #5. I didn't have much time to kill. I went straight for macho's bike and had to straighten his bars a bit due to his crash the previous day. I slammed the ol' front tire against a tree a couple of times. I almost got it straight and headed to my truck for the wig and helmet change. Doug Cucovatz tailed me and wanted to talk. (Great guy, BTW.) I finally ended up just pulling the wig out and putting it on in front of him. Pulled the helmet on and asked him if I had long hair showing out the back. He said, "Oh yeah, about seven inches worth." I apologized for leaving him in mid conversation but cranked up macho's bike and hustled to the starting gate. Big Maico gave me a knowing look as Vintage Dave had told him one of his women riders would not be completely feminine. (He knew it was macho's bike but he didn't know who was riding it.) My intent was to get the holeshot and then just play with anyone that was passing me. However, this was my first time to ever race a 450 and I was totally unfamiliar with macho's bike. I handled the start much like I do my 250 and found myself completely sideways off the gate and grabbing both brakes just to keep from hitting a young lady a few gates to my right. Once she was clear, I hammered down in that deep Splendora sand and got a mid-pack start. Since I started badly, I pretty much just goofed off and waited for the ladies behind me to try to pass. I've already told my story about #111. She was really mad that some gray haired old lady passed her! Her name is Buffy Hughes. (Not our Buffy) I promise! She had a really good laugh later when I told her it was me. I made absolutey sure I got lapped while actually competing for several hundred feet with each of the gurls that passed me. Once I was certain I had been lapped, I found Char and doubled the triple step up with her. Very cool! Imahoot has much more speed than I expected. Especially since she is coming off a broken wrist. Go Imahoot! I came up on Mrs Twister in the back where the ruts are so deep. She was picking her bike up and I stopped the 558 a few ruts over from her. I killed it and got off while it just stood in the rut. That's how deep they were! She got going again and the race was about to be over. I puttered along feeling my "hair" flowing behind me. I was VERY tempted to nail the triple step up on that last lap with the extra power of macho's 450 at my fingertips. However, my conservative side prevailed and I guess I'll just have to do it on my own 250 next March. The Chick race was fun but it was much more tiring than I expected. It is harder than I thought it would be to ride slow on purpose. My legs were cramping while weighting the outside peg! I'm surprised there isn't a picture of me holding my outside leg out straight while in a corner. I remember several left turns where I was sticking my right leg out straight just to stop the cramping. LOL! Crazy but alot of fun! Each time I hit the finish line jump I could hear John Lorenz whistling or hollering at me. Yes, he knew it was me. I had to tell him I was going to ride macho's bike because he had macho's front # plate on during the ATM/TT race. He switched it for me before I got to macho's bike. Thank you John and thank you Machoman! That was a great part of my weekend. And yes, I know I'm crazy!

Good writeup!! I was so confused when you stopped. I was tired, had just gotten the bike upright, backed it up so I could go forward and this nice girl, wait, gray haired girl then I heard your voice and knew right away. Gave me the laugh I needed to get back on and get going again.

That was a good read David!

I bet you made a cute cheerleader.

Thanks for crashing the chick class...just made it all that much more fun. Maybe we should triple side by side in March?

LOL, you should have seen Satch's face when he seen you bust the finsih line jump and the tunnel Jump..........he said who the heck is that! I laughed and said thats Jedi. He laugh also and said no way! You could hear people hollaring cat calls as you would pass............ I wish you would have rode the bike saturday when your broke. If ever in the future you see my bike sitting around, take it and treat it likes it yours. But I plan to be back on a 250f soon. Jedi your forsure one of the brotherhood now. Just need to add a 393 somewhere to your name or sig.

That had me laughing edi! Man I wish I would have been there! I would have found a wig andhad a blast with you. Althjough, they would have suspected me for a German Swim team girl. My 6'1 195 lbs would be harder to hide!

Okay macho. I'll think about it. It's just that since I didn't personally meet Garrett, I have been reluctant to do that. His legacy is bigger than all of us.

Jaybird, John L, Big M are the only ones that I know that actually talk or met Garrett. The rest of us only read about Garrett and met the Berg family.

Bring it gurl! I'll be doin it and you're invited! I'll be gettin' comfortable with 5th gear between now and then. We've got Clint and MxMike to lead us over.
I know you're just kidding but I think a yz125 could do it if you are up for it. It's like I told Satch. "We ain't gettin' any younger"! It's time to do it and be proud about it. I dialed in every other jump out there and now my focus is totally on the triple step up. I own it! Piece of cake. :

Kirtwell spoke to Garrett several times on the phone and played him almost every night on MotocrossMadness2. We were supposed to meet up with him at Houston SX in 2002 and go to SJCP the following morning and ride together...but I forgot his cell phone number and didn't know where he was seated in the Astrodome...we totally missed riding with him......It's one of my many regrets in life

Here's is his post on Thumpertalk:

I am riding next Sunday (the day after the Houston SX) at Splendora with Curtis (Kirtwell is his name on TTalk) He lives in Oklahoma but is coming down for the Houston SX and we are going to hook up and ride! Any other TX riders want to join us? The best tracks in the TX area are VP (Floresville), Swan MX, and Splendora...it would be worth the 3 hr drive from Dallas. Let me know if you are interested. Later,

Garrett

It was great to see you out there Jedi even if it was only briefly. Not many guys would dress up as a gurl and get out and ride with us.

Great post Jedi.

As for a 125 doing it, I know they can, at GMBII there were a couple of kids on 80's doing it!! :

Actually, I wasn't entirely kidding. I think if I can get over the tabletop cleanly, I can carry enough speed to get over the triple step up. I just need a little more time on my bike... so don't fully count me out in March.
