Hi, I am new to the world of 4 strokes, but as i am looking for a new bike i dont know weather to stay which 2 stroke or go for a 4 stroke. I have heard that the yzf's are more reliable than the yz's but im not shore. Your help/comments about these bikes would be very helpful. Thanks.

they both require maintenance. air filters, oil changes, etc. the thumpers require ferquent oil changes, and some valve adjustments, whereas the pingers needs more frequent top ends. i'd surely go for the thumper.

Welcome to ATM! YardPro summed it up pretty well. All bikes need maintance... I switch to a 4 stroke last year and will never buy another 2 stroke. YZ250F

Are the 250 four strokes really that much better? I went to a mx track for the first time last week and I'd bet that 75% of the bikes there were 2 strokes. I've only ridden a 125 once and it was one that had serious jetting problems after being ported and wasn't running right. It was pretty fun, kinda hard to ride at first. However, at the time I was riding a gas gas 300 which had power that was pretty well the opposite of a 125, all bottom and no top. Now that I'm on a yz250f I'd like to try a yz125 sometime. If most of the A and pro riders are still riding 2 strokes they can't be that bad. At that track I went to I'd say most of the faster riders were on 2 strokes while the older, slower guys were on 4 strokes.

I think it is based on riding style.... If your racing MX I don't think it makes much difference. I ride alot of trails and enduros, so a 4-stroke works better for me. Ride what you are comfortable with.

if the fat, old, slow guys were riding two strokes they most likely wouldnt get past the starting gate

| How much work are you prepared to do? The 250F isnt an XR250. You need to stay on top of valve adjustments, oil changes, and (flame suit at the ready) top ends. A 13,500 RPM slipper skirt piston race bike needs top ends at least once a year. Crank bearings must be replaced at no more than 2 years, and thats stretching it. When you let the bearings get worn, the G-loads at 13,000 RPM will give them enough play to possibly kiss a valve, which would break a keeper and result in a dropped valve and probably a new $700 head and $400 cylinder, not to mention around $300 for TI valves. I love the 250f, and would take one over a 125 undoubtfully, and when maintained its a great race bike. Just be ready to split the cases and keep bearings fresh, or get ready to spend lots of cash. | A 4stroke is much more forgiving in the C and D classes as well. and also a great play bike |
