one of my freind bought a brande new YZ250F and we took it out riding today at the track. i have never ridden a 4 stroke dirt bike before and i was surprised about the power it has. anyways, on to the question. his bike has this blac little lever by the clutch and it supposed to be a "hot start" lever. what the heck is that for ?????

That is the decompression lever

4 strokes have troulble starting when hot sometimes. That will make it easier.

interesting. so that does what then?

Opens up an exhaust valve just a tiny bit so the bike is easier to kick over...with an exhaust valve open slighty the combustion chamber is not sealed 100% and does not hold maximum compression.

interesting. i did not know that. so, this basically help you not have to jump on the kick start to get the bike to turn over. nice feature. it wouldve helped me this morning when i went down in a hard turn it took me about 3 minutes to get the bike to kick over. technology is wonderful. = )

it's not a decompression lever, the bike does it automatically, it's a hot start lever. It's kind of the opposite of a choke, it allows the bike to be started easily when it's hot, like after you crash and need to restart quickly. Although I've never had to use mine, crash or not.

can he remove the lever ?

You'll need it someday. Maybe not during winter, but you will need it.

Why remove it? If it is in the way, get a Dr D hot start lever and move it to the throttle side. That is way we have on both our bikes set up. Works like a charm

Yep, ATM is the best site ever. Dealers say u never need it, buts its good to have just in case.

Correct..that is the hot start lever. If you ever dump the bike and it is hot you will need the hot start. Yeah it will start without it but if you use the hot start lever you will get it lit in a kick or two. It is imperative when you are racing.
