Default FMF "quiet" series... (or review your exhaust here)

Bwahahahhahahahahahhaaa...... talk about rolling on the floor laughing your arse off.... if there is anything I can without question, without hesitation, without exception say about my bike... well... it sure the hell ain't quiet!!!

Now I know some of you racer folk have to survive sound checks, and some of us in Cali have officer treehugger to contend with once in a while, but outside of regulations and crap like that, does anyone actually have a pipe/sparky combo that they can describe as quiet... and hold a straight face???

For what its worth, I'm told that the FMF Q, or quiet series?? is actuall "quieter" than most. Anyone care to comment or give a review on your pipe combo??? If interested in my paticular application, I'm curious to know if you can make a dent in the sound level without turning it into an XR200... could you imagine a bike that quiet with this kinda power?!?!?! Now that's funny.

Anyone have a favorite???

FMF
Dr.D
Yoshimura
Pro Circuit

Default Q series Muffler

Hey Whisker!
I am in the process of trying to find out the same stuff. I got a YZ 426 (02) and I have been told that I will not be able to ride in some of the areas north of Sacramento until I get a quieter pipe. Which just pisses me off! I don't mide the spark arrestor but to quiet it down!
Please!
My buddy who just got an 03 CRF450 and he immediately bought a Q series so he can ride.
My problem is trying to find one at a reasonable price. Most of the ones that I have found have been in the $300 dollar range! That was for the can only!
Way too much cash just so I can ride in a few spots!
Damn treehuggers in California!
Maybe I should move to Arizona!
Need a job first!

buckey,
right there with ya.. unfortunately, i think the 96 db limit is nation wide. i could be mistaken, if i am, someone please say so.

it does suck trying to meet this limit while not choking your bike down to 226 power.... there are things out there, but not sure what works.. the only good thing on my side is that i won't have my bike running for a while so i have no choice but to wait and see the tests and reviews of "quiet pipes"...

supposedly something called the Vortip will reduce noise levels, but not sure how much...

thunder alley is working on a quieter version
and so is Dubach Racing Development.. DR.D , and i am sure others are as well.. especially if it is nation wide like i think...

i will also post anything i find snooping around...

Mat, Have you been tested anywhere yet? You may be surprised. My uncorked WR was about 102 at the '01 ISDE Qualifier in Ohio.
I don't trail ride much so I'm not sure if Ohio Forest Rangers are testing yet.

Default Q Series Debate goes on~

Yo Whisker!
Hey thanks for getting back to me!
My buddy and I are trying to figure out what system to get that will allow us to ride ourin the open without some tree hugger taking us out with a sniper rifle because he cannot her a leaf fall.
I am all for preserving the forest in everyway. But not if it has some yuppy tied to it!

Anyway,
I have fond several diffrent pipes that offer a "quieter" version. FMF, Yoshi, White Brothers and one other one but that was few beers ago!
Did any body find a sub $300 pipe?
maybe I am being cheap but it just pisses me off!
See Ya!

I was not aware of the sound regs being nation wide??? In fact I haven't heard a thing about it here in UT?

I'll have to do some research though.

Like I mentioned ealrlier, I am new to this stuff. But, my friend has ridden in places that actuially set a decibal meter on the rear fender and rev the engine to see just how loud you are.
Welcome to my world!

Hey guys... well I wasn't really trying to start a sound check thread, but that's cool by me, I just don't know anything really, well other than you get checked at some pro events, at some state parks, by the occasional eco-nazi and so on... and the db meter goes like 50-ft away somehow... but my point was to see if there really are "quiet" pipes on the market (not just labled that way), if you are using one, what your review is, and is it a power robbing hunk o'crap???

As far as sound checking goes, I don't have any plans on needing to pass one to ride... seems to me if they get that up my butt I can drive to another patch of dirt to ride on.... but I guess it would be fine with me to lower the noise output as long as it doesn't turn the bike into a moped.

Maybe I should of just asked if your aftermarket pipe makes the bike any louder?!?!

Michigan checking in here. This is what we have to go through to ride on state land:

"Noise levels will be checked from a twenty (20) inch distance at a 45 degree angle from the exhaust pipe at half the vehicle's rated RPM's or as detailed in the automotive specifications SAE J1169, March 92 or SAE J1287, June 86. The maximum noise level permitted under these testing conditions will be 94 dBa which is the current limit set by the Off-Road Recreation Vehicles Act of Part 811 of 1994 PA 451 (MCL 324.811). All vehicles will be required to have a muffler and spark arrester containing baffles that can be confirmed by inserting a flexible, plastic rod."

Keep in mind that for every 3 dB increase in the SPL, the sound energy DOUBLES. So 97 dB is twice as loud as 94 dB. The FMF "Q" system w/o the powerbomb meets the 94 dBa spec, with the powerbomb it test at 93 dBa most days. Sound checks are dependent upon several atmospheric variables, so if the strict limit is 94 dBa, you'll pass most days but there is a chance you may not.

Thumbs down Re: FMF "quiet" series... (or review your exhaust here)

They check us at the dunes too.
93 db plus or minus 2 db if I remember correctly.

The tickets are expensive too! My friend got one 3 yrs ago. I believe it was like 145 bucks or so? Ouch!:

hi flow header, stainless, about 130 bucks

powerbomb header, stainless, about 200

Default Header Selection

When selecting a FMF header you need to keep in mind the type of riding that you're going to be doing. Three headers to choose from in two materials (stainless and titanium). There's the High flow, the Powerbomb MX and the Powerbomb SX, If sound is a concern then I would disregard the High flow model because the Powerbomb helps quiet it some and adds a little power (and looks cool). The Poverbomb MX has a larger diameter than the SX and punches up (boosts) the top end. The Powerbomb SX has a smaller diameter pipe and moves the power lower. I'll be going with the SX pipe as I mostly run trails and don't spend a lot of time near the redline.
