anyone running a 24 or 22mm offset on the yzf's. how did it affect your ability to take a tighter corner? I'd like to sharpen the steering on my 450 or maybe get a 250F and do the same. thanks, joe

Just wondering have you tried a redneck method of just lowering your triple tree as low as you can on your forks?

Hi Macho, yeh I have run them even and slid them up to 5and 10 mm. run the sag between 97-10mm, taller TAG bars, had my suspension re-valved... all helped improve it. I'm going to try a Maxxiz SI front tire next. Just been researching this and saw Applied, Ride and TAG all have different offsets they claim improve cornering without hurting straight line stability. My bike is pretty good but still has a little more push on hard dusty track-(like my practice track at home) than a couple of the other bikes I've ridden there. I always thought it was just the track and my lack of skill until I bought my son a friends used crf250. Then I thought well maybe it's just the 250F until I rode a friends crf450 on it and it stuck. Both do have the maxxis SI on them but also the front end just stuck. My dilema is that my 04 CF450 handled well but had several things go wrong in the 2nd yea I raced it and I lost confiendence in it. I had a couple Yamahas and they wre reliable as a bike can be but the 4t's don't turn as well so I'm not as aggressive in the corners. At home the dusty slick track push makes me dab my leg pretty often and that makes the one I broke last year ache a lot. t's not as noticeable on big tracks where corners sweep more or you have more ruts but at home where I ride a couple days a week normally it's really apparent. so I love everything but that , but that is a tough thing to overlook. When I did my review I had only bigger prepped tracks to compare to and my memory of an 04 crf450. thanks, joe Last edited by joe346CBMX; 09-02-2007 at 08:00 AM.

what about air pressure? I know I like to run less the harder the trail is. I also think you might still be alittle shy(which is good) ti hammer it cause of the major break you had. It took me almost three years for me to pinn it like I use too.

I'm confused Joe. The Maxxis SI is a soft to intermediate terrain tire. The typical characteristic of a tire like that on hard packed dry dirt will be a push in the corners. What do you have your clickers set at? I have found the clicker settings have an impact on the initial compression of the forks. Also rebound. Remember the fork clicker settings only work for slow speed compression and the valving works for midstroke and high speed compression. I have found a click or twosofter on the compression makes a difference in the cornering.

air pressure is 12-14 psi depending on conditions. Just lookng at the SI because that's what is on the Hondas I rode back to back with my bike on the same track/conditions a few times. I know the geometry is different too. The YZF 450 has different setting and oil ht. than stock so the comp is 12 rebound 10. The CRF250f was set up for 185 with springs/revalve etc when we bought it. running same psi, gary's CRF450 is set for 210 I think with revalve, oil ht... I am timid and that does contribute but again sticking btter on the hondas which inspires confidence to go faster. thanks, I guess no one runs a different offset ? joe

I've talked to guys that have run the different clamps and they said it does make a difference in cornering. After I got my valving the way I wanted it I rode a YZ450 that had the offset clamps and noticed a slight difference. It did corner just a tad better but IMHO not so much better that it would make the cost of the other clamps worth it. But, as with anything like that it is a subjective opinion. If it were me, I might try some different clicker settings before I went to that level. From the conversations we have had I think you would probably like the difference the clamps would make. You would just need to weigh the worth of the additional cost.

thanks Ernie, I been talking to a guy on TT who PM'd this after he tested this weekend. I can get a pretty decent deal from TAG as a sponsor but you are right I don't want to spend a bunch on triple clamps if they don't help much. That's really why I'm asking first. here is the gentleman's response to testing 24mm offset on his 07 YZF450 over the weekend. ltr, Joe Well the clamps made a pretty big difference! I had my forks raised 5mm below the line and the bike turned so sharp I had to raise them back to stock. I can't believe how different the bike handled. I was racing a sand track today so hard to tell how much the benefit will be but so far I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the 24mm will be the fix! I'll keep ya posted, I'm really happy so far.. I just want to ride the bike some more and see if there are any negative affects of the handling or stability in any way. I think if you went to the 22mm clamps it would be too aggressive of a change in the front end.. the bike may "tuck" too much with that offset. ***************

Not sure if it will help, but Motocross Action Mag (Sept '07) put out a article specifically on the YZ450F for this same issue of turning and different offset triple clamps. It starts on page 100, if you get a copy. Definately worth a peek! Good Luck, Brian

yeah so I have adult A.D.D, I admit it, lol. I'm not sure I received it actually. Just e-mailed MXA to see because I don't usually miss that stuff. I just got my Oct. TWMX and the cover was ripped off but with it. I think someone in the mail room likes MXA, it's a conspiracy... maybe, I'll dbl check my stack of mags when I get home.

My kids deny swiping it too. by the way my keyboard at hom doesnot work right so if I look illiterate at times, well I'm only half to blame. lol. joe |
