| I'll be dipped if I can figure out the witchcraft behind firing up todays thumper... the drill... the drill... it's all there is... but what about when the drill fails, you know damn well it's easier to pull the tank than too keep kicking... but not me... not last night... choke, hot start, twist, comp., on, off, this plus that, that but not this, this and that and half of this... but I would not be denied... like a mule on dope, I kick her and kicked her and kicked her until my hip blew up... but it finally fired after a million kicks, even though I could smell the gas comin out the pipe!! what the hell is the deal here??? some days it wants to start itself... some days, I gotta go bo jackson on it... plug is fresh, it runs perfect... heck, when its warm, I can start it in sandles... still I observe the drill to the letter, I even flash back to dubach takin bradshaw thru the whoops in anaheim way back when, the whole routine... yet she is still stubborn sometimes... anyone else have one of these "occasional" days??? |

| Yeah, just push it over and spit on it. That usually helps me. |

'99 WR400 none unless you count airbox lid and throttle stop removal stock (BPE 8 from memory) 92 pump the bike is basically stock, fully octopussed, no yz timing, no grey wire mod, no carb mods or anything like that... I was thinking maybe reviewing the air screws or whatever runs the lower circuits, and seeing if maybe its in there somewhere... I wasn't dead set on that though, just an opening thought... mostly I was wondering if "the drill" just isn't enough to fire it up sometimes for others and if any advice was available... not a kicker/button flame war... in other words... thanks ego |

| Whisker_Biscuit, Settle down. I ride the exact same bike as you and was not trying to be a butt head or anything. Sometimes I have kicked on the thing until I thought I was going to die. I have literally wanted to kick it over and spit on it. I was really just trying to say that I know what you mean. These bikes can be a real bear at times and sometimes the fire right off. If you figure out the answer and can find it in your heart to help me out I would appreciate it. But please lighten up. |

| Whisker, I assume you turn the fuel off after every ride? Do you transport the bike and then start it? I ask this because the fuel in the carb might be going into the engine. How are the valve clearences? If they are too tight or gone, the bike will become very hard to start. This is a tough one tough. |

| Ok, Whisker Biscuit. I am sorry no hard feelings. I was just trying to be funny not pretentious. Have a great weekend and good luck with the starting. Issues |

| It could be your bike is possessed. Consider an exorcist. Or you may just want to hire a guy with a really big right leg to kick it for you when this happens. |

mods: GB/BK mod (reduces the duration of the acc. pump for better response) , blue/grey wire pulled(gives a bit more power to the ignition to help starting), jamesnow(my copy of the powernow, splits carb venturi into two smaller opening to increase air velocity at 1/2 throttle and below, helps starting too for some reason), yosh pipe.. 165 on the main, 1 3/4 turns out on the fuel mixture screw. my buddies '01 426 would go through 2 of us sometimes to get it started, until i made the modifications above.. now, (if my dork of a friend can get the routine down, he REALLY needs the auto decomp..lol) now his bike also start in no more than 3 kicks, hot or cold... i hope these help... any other questions, feel free! |
