There's a vid somewhere of Stewart on one for his ride day at Dade, Florida. Whatched it last night.

Sweet looking bike - that's for sure!

It's looking pretty good in the vids from what I can tell. I'm withholding my judgement until (1) there are some shootouts done and (2) we can hear from some "average joes" about their impression.

I can't disagree with that. Especially the Dr D (Doug Dubach) as I know he's on the Yamaha payroll, so of course he's going to have good stuff to say.

I'm actually more interested to see how the maintenance is on it. I'm guessing Valves adjustments will be par for the course now with the 4 cam engine. I'm also interested to see how the air filter changes go.

I hope it's a good bike all around.

Woody, I don't see valve adjustments being easier or harder than with a 5 valve, just that there's one less to check now.
I really want to lay eyes on one of these bikes (and be allowed to take it apart just a little bit)- my biggest fear with the air filter (which is pretty minor) is that you will have to pre-wash the airbox and dry it so that you don't get any dirt/water into the intake tract once the filter is removed.

Exactly. Yes 4 is easier, but I'm pretty sure you'll have to adjust them more often. With more lift required on the 2 valves vs the 3, more wear to the valves will occur.

The good thing is that this SHOULD significantly reduce the amount of money it costs to replace a Yamaha head when it becomes necessary. The 5 valve head was crazy expensive!!

I'm not so sure, i haven't noticed any differance between the 4 or 5 valves on the Kawi and yammies we have owned. If there bulit right they last the same, don't know about Honda though Had to throw that one in

I can't say I can agree with that from what I have seen here....a friend with a '09 KXF450 had to make his first adjustment at 18 hours, I have seen Yamaha 5 valve heads go 60-80 without ever needing anything.

Well i've got 70 hrs on one bike here now that still hasn't been adjusted, and the 450 just hit 140 and has had one set of shims only, that's as good as any Yamaha i've owned.

Yes that is pretty good, but the 5 valve takes less beating than a 4 period. It doesn't mean it won't have longevity, because their are a lot of things that can make them last a while -- My point is that I doubt they will be quite as maintenance free as the 5 valve seemed to be.

how? they're both 4 strokes...............make its the design period...or more important how the bike up keep is....honda in the pass made bad seats(valve)...yamaha did also..they recalled theirs.

the difference is the material one is made from.

Just so you know people, the new 4 valve engine in the WRr 250 has valve service intervals every 30,000 k's, would you like me to do the maths on how many ride hours that is??? 5 valves are old school, move on.

I gotta say that is awesome then Pete!! Surprisingly awesome!!

Oh and Chase, I am not nervous about valves at all...you ride these things long enough (four strokes) its just part of the game, thats all. And for what its worth I got 110 hours out of my first set of Honda valves.
