Default 01 YZ250F?

Ok. I can pick up a used, 01 yz250F for about 3700 bucks in my area. This is something I would be able to afford without having to get a loan or finance.

Or, I can get a new bike and finance it.

Whaddo I do?

Dell, Ive had resaerched the 250F (almost bought one) and I think you can find a better deal for an 01' (maybe around 3200)

IMO I would go new, nothing like a new machine-yes it will cost more but it will be brand new-everything that happens to it will be all you. My 2 cents

possibly....

If I bought an 01 I would be prepared to do an almost complete tear down.

I dont know much about 4 strokes but my uncle has been working on cars all his life. He and I can probably do a topend on the thing if need be.

Just a question, what should the compression be on these? And what is the proper way to test?
If i was looking at a used one I would be sure to do a compression test before i bought.

Any car compression test will work, its a gauge that goes in instead of the spark plug, then you kick the bike over as hard as you can a few times...Any local hardware store should have them

All I know about 250F compression is that they run at about 12.5:1...very high reving bike.

You really cant compression check a 250F because the decompression is manually operated and you cant kick it through more than once.

on the new ones, you cant test them because they have the auto decompression, but on the older ones (read: '01s) you can. just dont pull in the decompression lever

i really dont think it will need a compression test, but then again i dont know how long the hi-performance thumpers last. :

get ready for a sore right leg!

the 250 thumpers are ridden like a 125. very high rpm's. they are don't last as long as the 450's or any of the trail thumpers do.

dell.

BUY NEW.

if you can put $3500 down your payments will only be about $40.00/ month

I would, but I really dont like the idea of having to make 45 dollar payments every month for 60 months.

Whats the old addage... Never finance toys....

A new bike would be really nice, but I am willing to rebuild anything I buy used.

Are there any year specefic problems with the 01's? I can probably find a good deal on one.

With interest rates the way that they are, I would definitely go new--but not for 60 months! Shorten the term.

Its not THAT hard to start that you need to make a purchase plan around the starting procedure.
