Default HONDA 83 XL 250 NO SPARK

so i was riding my honda xl 250 1983 for a while now and it was running great until all of a sudden the spark just gave out on me. I am terrible when it comes to electric so I'm wondering if there is anyone out there that can help me with this problem?

Hi,

I'm happy to offer some of my experience;

I bought a little spark checker at harbor freight, one lead plugs onto the plug and the other to the coil. it is nice because i used to run a wire into the coil and then into tue palm of my hand while i cranked her over to see if i was shocked or not now just a tilt of the head down to see if the light is on or not.

My first question is how do you know there is no spark?

Next have you installed a new spark plug? These are so cheap and save such frustration in troubleshooting to just replace and know that's a good new one.

Next after those 2 things then i check the coil. They are simple coil of wire and an electronic continuity checker can check the resistance between the two leads. There is a 9v battery trick where 2 aligator leads and attached to the 9: leads and then touched briefly to the coil input (thin wires) this will create a spark in a good coil. Some coils only have 1 thin wire and the other end of the connection is the metal where the coil mounts, so the leads can be touched from the thin wire and the metal ground to excite a spark, which again is best seen with a spark plug tester light (though i still use the shock method now if the tester is not available)

Checking the stator is the last step, and just as simple to do a resistance check between the stator leads, and a very simple replace job.

I have an abundance of coils if yours is bad and you need a spare

Do an ohms test on the primary and secondary sides of the coil after making sure the mounts are rust and dirt free.
