Default First Time at the track

So I am wanting to head out to a track for the first time. I am generally used to riding on farms with flat land, no jumps no hard turns etc. So where do I start. I know I will be very inexpeierenced so I dont want to jump out on the track with other guys and practically kill them b.c im going to slow. Should I just stick to fields for a bit and practice turns or just head out to the track and go balls out.

I think it would be best to befriend someone that can walk you through getting started. It's a very steep learning curve and there are a lot of do's and don'ts - having someone to ride with and show you how to do certain things would be extremely helpful.

Ride a pace you are comfortable with. Learn as you go.

If you can get to the track during the week rather than on the weekend, you stand a better chance of getting less stress from the other riders, which then allows you to focus on your riding and not on who you are in the way of.

When you are on the track and you hear a faster rider coming up behind you, hold your line. They will get around you and chances are they've already decided where. It's always best to hold your line.

And when you decide to exit the track, exit at the proper place and if possible, hold your hand up or something. I can't tell you how many collisions I've seen because a newer rider decides all the sudden to just get off the track without looking to see if someone else is coming. Not only that, I've seen people wreck because a slower rider will be all over the track.

I like Scott's idea of finding someone to buddy up with, it helps a lot. Also Val's suggestion to go during an off-time is excellent.

Most of all, have fun...and wear all the safety gear.

If you could be so fortunate to find a group of riders hanging out in the pits, it would be awesome. I have yet to meet a rider who wasn't interested in sharing his experience with someone willing to learn. Just lay it out and tell them you are a first-timer. You may even have one of them volunteer to ride shotgun behind you for a lap or two. If that happens, be sure to talk to him after the laps. Tell them what you were thinking and feeling in certain corners and he will most likely give you some feedback.
If you end up getting on the track without any acquaintances, just stay to the far outside or far inside and hold your line as stated before. It might mean you are having to ride through some deep slop but just give it the gas and stay where you are. Standing up may give you the advantage when it comes to holding your line. Direct the bike with your knees. If you are on your own, just take it one lap at a time. Don't push yourself beyond your limits. You will probably be tense and get tired quickly.
