The first trick I tried was a no footer. Just try it on a jump that you are comfortable with and get decent air with. Then you just start small. After a while I was trying heel clickers. But make sure you stretch your groin or you'll be hating life. Just make sure you are prepared to eat dirt, it happens. And don't go big the first day out. Broken collar bones never heal right.

I've been practicing hitting the back brake to bring the front wheel down while air-born, so far, I've killed the engine five times, but I'm not high enough to hurt myself, I just land with the engine off and it turns over after a quick lurch forward. I have to remember, stab the brake, once the wheel is stopped, take the foot OFF the brake. It's hard for me to feel exactly where my foot is when I'm wearing boots. Anyway, I'm getting better and self improvement is what it's all about.

cjacobs, just curious, do you clutch when doing the brake-tap?

Yes, I pull the clutch in, but it's the "tapping" part I have to work on, since I don't have a good feel for the brake lever with my boots on, I tend to keep my foot on the brake when I let the clutch back out. Also, I have to take my fingers off the handle bar, otherwise, my fingers get in the way and I can't pull the clutch in far enough. It might need some adjusting. The other problem is, if I adjust the clutch so that I can leave my fingers between the clutch and the handle bar, I can't reach the clutch, seems my fingers are too short.

Are you supposed to use the clutch when brake tapping in the air? What about corners? I am having a lot of trouble with corners, trying to get faster thru them. I have been hitting the break to slide into them and sometimes I use the clutch and sometimes I dont, I am not sure which is correct.

I think you'd better use the clutch whenever you use the brake, otherwise, the engine will stall unless your brake pads are worn out.

gotcha

I am not confident enough to try a brake tap, I was just curious. I clutch and brake with only one finger as that seems to work best for me. I don't have big hands... I think? LOL

Well, now I’m thinking that the clutch is disengaged just fine with my fingers between the lever and the handlebar, I probably was leaving my foot on the brake and thinking it was the clutch not disengaged when the engine stopped. I’ll have to test that. Char, you should try the brake tap over a small jump, there’s nothing like the feeling of accomplishment! After I get that down, I’m going to start working on shifting in the air. Then… a whip!

Yup!

I always practice to keep my back straight, butt out, elbows down, chin up, knees out and toss out a fist pump whenever I cross the finish line. This always gets the crowd goin'!

Butt-Whips are also a crowd pleaser.

I had the same problem with the clutch until I got the ASV set up that allows you to adjust the lever in and out to suit your finger reach after you adjust the cable where you need it. Well worth the $60 and a warranty to boot.

im not a big expert or anything but first just get use to moving in the air like doing small whips just get the feel of you bike cause if you not and you got your feet off or something you might be in trouble when you kick sideways.
