xr500 smoking

im restoring a 83 xr500, and whenever i start it up a bunch of smoke pours out the exhaust. at firts i thought it was the fact that there was too much oil, it was filled above the mark. but i drained some out and it still is smoking like crazy. the only two thing i can think of are tired piston rings and/or bad valves and seats. what do you experts think?

i want to get a second opinion before i start tearing it apart

its white smoke by the way. also how much oild should i put in the bike, im thinking about draining it all out and putting new oil in anyway.

i checked the header and exhaust and they were covered in oil, so i woul guess thats not good.

the guy i bought the bike from didnt know anything about motorcycles so i dont think he replace the rings or anything like that.

thats what im thinking, only it means i have to pull the motor out of the frame, which i didnt really want to do.
