Question xr400 piston life

i recently got a bike for my girlfriend, and im saving up for an xr400 because my cr is too hard to ride at a slower pace. what are the maintenance periods with these bikes? i hear they are bulletproof, but i would still like to know when its time to change the piston and rings out. also how often should i check the valves. she has an xr200 as well.

Proud new owner of 96 XR400!! and new to ATM!!!

It's bullet proof Monkey, honest. You need to check the valves (only to adjust) once a year if you ride a bunch.
The important part of the XR400 is to learn the starting drill and it will serve you a long time.
It's a tad heavy though.....258 lbs. dry.
