Question signs of overheating

i am relatively new to four strokes, and my only prior experience is with an 88 lt230. i never really gave overheating much thought when i rode that because it was usually pretty cold in michigan.

my question is, if my xr500 starts to overheat, since its air cooled what can i expect it to do, and if i buy a temp gauge what should be a limit, degree-wise, to where i should stop and let my bike cool down for a while?

im putting all this work into this bike and i dont really want to go out and seize it on the first ride

Some of the signs of overheating are loss of power, detenation or pinging. Not much of a reason for an air cooled bike to overheat unless you are running in tight woods on a hot day. If the bike is modded (higher compression, high rpm's, jetting), then that certainly raises the possibility of overheating. Lean jetting can run the engine temperature up, but just riding around normally, it probably wouldn't cause a problem. Not sure what the cylinder head temperature should be, but when I ran modified midgets with vw air cooled engines on methanol, our oil temperature was 200-220f. And our cylinder head temperature was 400-425f. Maybe someone can chime in with some more info.

Which bike are you talking about?
Seems you already have answered some questions.
Assuming the fins are not plugged with mud and the jetting is not way off, it should be O.K.

Also Welcome to ATM.

i was talking about the XR. i was worried about overheating because it gets super hot out here and i wanted to know what to look for.

i asked around at school and was tolld to try to keep it under 210

i'll probably end up riding open desert so i guess overheating wont be a problem since its a low rpm bike, and ill be going relatively fast

Ride it bud....
I would be very surprised if you have a heat problem.
There is not a bike out there that handles desert heat better than the XR's.

Well....except the old XR350's (83-85) did have heat problems.
