Usflag Leaky Cooling System

Hey everyone,

I have a 2003 CRF450 and found that I have a major leaking issue with my cooling system. I am experiencing leakage from where the radiator hose goes into the motor. (see attached picture) There is an 8mm bolt going into the motor case from between the motor and the silver piece. I didn't realize it was leaking until there was steam shooting out of the vent tube....not good....and there was little-no coolant left in my bike. I checked the little gasket in there and it looks good, is there anything else that could be causing this leak besides a faulty O ring??

Travis

The only thing I can think is that the pipe that goes into it got a bit bent (since it has only one screw to hold it on) so it doesn't sit at the correct angle. That or the pipe its self is cracked maybe. Could also be the hose that hooks onto it. Could even be your radiator.

My suggestion is to fill it with water, warm it up on the stand and see exactly where the leak comes from.

Sometimes those leaks can be a hair line crack, that doesn't manifest its self until the motor/coolant is warm.

Thanks, I will further investigate this issue. I had a buddy tell me that it could be a hairline crack as well. It leaks when the bike isn't even on now...Im gunna tear it apart again and see what I can find out. And i'll repost on what I Uncover. Thanks again...if there is anything else you can think it may be, let me know.

I don't have anything else to add other than good luck! Let us know what happens/what you find.

Default Problem solved...

It turned out to be nothing but a leaky gasket, I got a new one that fit alot better and the problem is solved...I am still having the leaking from the telltale hole so I will probably be replacing my water pump to solve this problem. Thanks for the help!!

Good to hear. Just so you know the water pump is an easy job. Just make sure you have all the gaskets and you should be fine. I suggest replacing both inner and outter oil gaskets (they go around the impeller shaft), a new shaft, and a 2006 water pump impeller (optional, but helps fix the problem).

Default Sweet, Thanks...

Yea I have read some of the other threads and that seems like the way to go...I have an 06 piston in my bike too...and the added compression made a big difference. I also have to check the valve spacing and since i'm new to the 4 strokes i'm kinda intimidated by it all, but i'm sure following the manual will get me through it...

Thanks again
