Those were very good bikes. The only real issue is valve life. The OEM valves and seats wear out quickly. You can have the head rebuilt using stainless valves for longer life or replace the head from APE. THese heads come complete with new everything and ready to bolt on. The life is mush better that OEM and you even pick up a few HP.

As far as routine maintenance, I would give it a full check:
Check valve clearances and cam chain
Change the oil (trans and motor. I think these year Hondas have both)
Clean carb and note jetting down for future adjustments
Clean and oil air filter (and clean out the air box and boot as well)
Check over the bearings (steering stem, wheels, suspension, and swingarm). If they are good, give them a good coat of grease and reassemble.
Change brake fluid (or at least check it), check the operation of the master cylinders, and check the life left on the pads
Service the chain (clean, lube, and adjust) and check the sprockets
Check the spokes and tighten if necessary
Clean and lube the cables
Plan for at least a top end rebuild in the near future in order to have a good idea of what condition the motor is in inside.

None of this takes a tremendous amount of money and will give you a good idea of the condition the bike you bought is in and should give you an idea of what to prioritize as far as rebuilding.
