I have been looking into buying some engine ice but the price is a little much in my opinion so I started looking around. I went to a local autoparts store and found DEX-COOL. Engine ice has the ratings... -27F to 256F it cost around $16 for a HALF a gallon. DEX-COOL has the ratings of -84F to 276F at a mixture of 70% coolant to 30% water. I can buy 1 gallon for $10. It says it can be used on any aluminum radiator. Does anyone have or know of any reason not to try this out in my CRF450? Any help or info would be great!!! Here is one article I found on DEX-COOL [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Im pretty sure its OK as some of our members have used it but I am still not sold on using it. I recently bought Maxima's Cool Aid stuff and its fine, the price is ok as well.

Engine Ice does what it says it will do. It is a little pricey but look at what you spend on other things that don't protect the bike! What is up with you guys?? You have a $6000 motorcycle and you are worried about spending $15 on coolant?

I am not worried about spending $15 but if I can spend $10 on twice as much and it do the same job then that is $5 I can spend somewhere else.... If engine Ice is all that work then that is what I will be getting. If there are others that will work for a better price then what is wrong with "you guys" for throwing your money away, I will give you my address and you can mail it to me. Better yet I take PAYPAL........

I apologize. Coolant solutions are fairly simple.......actually riding is something different. If you don't want someone's opinion then don't solicit it. If you want use WHATEVER then use it, test it and then let people know what you found. Don't try and get someone to say "heck yeah that sounds like a great idea". Either take advice or try your own thing out and let us know what happens.

As was stated earlier, buy the cheaper stuff and report back to us on your findings. Sounds as though a few of these guys have had experience with the engine ice, and for them it has worked well. I believe Satch is just asking why take the risk on an expensive bike when only a few dollars are at risk. |

I'm an engine ice user as well. And love it. However, after reading what you posted (the link) I don't see any reason not to use it. Seems like it will work just fine. If you own a bike that tends to like to over heat (like mine) then the extra $5 is worth it since mine now doesn't overheat. But if not, I feel theirs a fine line between having a coolant that maybe cools too well (is that possible), meaning that the engine doesn't get up to its optimum heat range for optimum combustion/power output.

I agree with Woody. I also use Engine Ice along with four other riding buddies and none of us have experienced any overheating problems since using it. My 2 cents, buy Engine Ice because it works and you wont have to worry about it out on the trail.

I used regular car antifreeze on my yz426. It spit it out regularly. After switching to Engine Ice, my motor stay cooler. I say that because it doesn't spit out antifreeze nearly as much. Go with something that is proven. If you want to take a chance...do it on your bike.

I use Lo-tox in my CR250. It is the same type of coolant as Engine Ice. I can't remember the two types at the moment, but Engine Ice and Lo-tox are the better kind. I want to say it starts with a "p". It also has chems to protect the aluminum. Your thumper runs hotter so you may just want to buy the Engine Ice and know you have the best coolant possible and forget about it.

I used the Honda anti-feeze for about a year and it spit it out the overflo whenever it was idling. About 2 years ago I started using Dex-Cool it still comes out of the overflow once in a while but other than that it seems to work fine.

We use Engine Ice in all of the teams bikes. We have had no problem with it. Here in California its an issue to use coolant that is environmently friendly if you want to ride on state land. It appears there isn't an issue with the Dex-Cool. Buy it use it and report back here if you like. We would like to hear how it did.
