I removed the filter element (basically round hockey puck shape) from my son's CRF70 to clean it and noticed the filter and retainer ring appeared to be attached at some points but separated at others. I thought the element and retainer were one piece but when I went to the local dealer and picked up another, it didn't have the retainer ring attached. Since they're not supposed to be attached, I'm not going to replace it yet since the filter appears fine after cleaning it. My question is if these filters require some type of filter oil or if you just put them back in the retainer and bolt them back in? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks folks!

Yep, that's all my son's xr50 (CRF50) had and that's how it worked. Due to the thickness and how dense the foam was, I only put motor oil back on it though.

Sounds like I did it the same way, but I used no toil on my sons XR70 filter.
