crf450r air filter protection

when i bought my 07' crf450r the guy at the shop said to be careful about dust getting into your motor because it will mess up the coating on the valves.

is there any extra precautions i can take other then keeping my air filter spotless? i noticed that the air box sorta open on each side with to little spots and i ride all sandpit's so its kinda a concern to me

Hopefully I'm not stating the obvious but keep the filter oiled as well. If you clean it often, you should be fine.
And a little grease around the seal is important.

yeah i forgot to mention keeping the filter oiled, i definetly do that.

Most overlooked right there. Make sure you get it around the bottom corners. Have fun putting it back in too LOL. Kinda a PITA till you get it down.
