Default CRF450 leaking water pump seal question

I just pulled off the right crankcase cover to replace a leaking water pump and oil seals. I noticed that my coolant level was going down every time I rode, then when I changed the tranny oil, it was a creamy gray color. The seals looked a little worn, so I'm pretty sure that was the culprit. I have the crank case off and I'm about to order a new gasket to put it back together. Before I spend money for the gasket and express shipping, does anyone have any advice or tips for me. I don't want to put it back together to find out there is something else I should have checked or done, or another part that I should be replacing at the same time.

thanks.

Does anyone know if the 06 or 07 impeller will fit my 05. From reading other posts I guess the newer ones have a hole that reduces the pressure for a longer lasting seal. Does anyone have experience with this?

thanks.

The new impeller will go right into the previous year bikes. Replace the impeller at the same time as the seals or you'll never get the thing to seal. I also take some Gasgacinch and put it on the seals to help them seal up well.

What is Gasgainch? Also, is there anything I should do about the fact that coolant got into the tranny? The cover has been off for about a week now in my garage, so maybe any water/ coolant residue has had a chance to evaporate?

As far as the tranny goes, I'd fill it with tranny fluid and drain it until it looks clean. Then I'd run it through all of the gears and drain it and check it again.

You can buy it at about any autoparts store. I like it where there isnt damage to cases from people prying them apart. I am not a fan of silicone in most cases.

If you have some scratches Yamahabond 2 is my choice. It is sold by about all the dealers with their name on it too.

Baron is spot on. But I would also replace the impeller shaft. Also don't forget a new water pump gasket and case gasket. You have to take the case off to replace the impeller shaft. That is a cool trick to try Gasgacinch on the oil seals I have never tried it on seals only gaskets and belts

check that the impeller shaft hasnt got any grooves worn in it from the seals. i had trouble with my cr loosing coolant due to wear in the shaft. for the price it costs its worthwhile replacing.

Check your counter balancer shaft for worn bearings, the water pump shaft rides inside the balancer shaft if it's wobbling the pump will continue to leak. I just replaced my 04 CRF450R water pump shaft, bearing, both seals and it still leaked, then I pulled it apart and checked my balancer, yep, it needs new bearings, both bearings are under $10 and you can replace them without splitting the cases. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I have now realized that it's not the water pump that is leaking. I am not getting any fluid in the tranny. I think I am losing coolant because of a head gasket seal that needs to be replaced. I have to constantly put fluid in while i'm riding and it's not coming out of the overflow. I think I can see a some residue around the head gasket too.

I don't know if you fixed this yet but it will come out the weep hole in the bottom and be unnoticed. I went through the same problem until I replace everything with the 06. Right side crankcase cover, impeller, bearing, seal, shaft. It was alway the coolant side seal never the oil seal. Comes out the weep in the bottom of the cover it you may not see it.
