Moto changing engine oil problems !!!! HELP

hi guys.

ok so heres the thing. i recently bought an 07 crf250r and today was the firts time i changed the engine oil.

so i took it for a short ride first just 10 mins or so to get the bike all warmed.

then i drained the oil and and kicked it over a few times as stated in manual to do, then took off filter cover cleaned it and replaced with a new filter and put it all back together.

whilst i was filling i thought it was starnge that after i put about 700cc of oil in i still couldnt see any oil on the dipstick side. none what so ever it was dry so i got a torch and looked into the casing and no oil inside. went back to the right hand side of the bike looked in and plenty of oil.

now what did i do wrong? why wont the oil move into the left side casing area and show the level of oil on the dip stick ? i moved the bike around and even tride to kick it over just so things moved inside but with out starting it and still no oil in the dip stick side.

so i have just left it and tried to find a solution in the manual but with no luck

please help i really dont want to F@%k it so soon after i got it..

can anyone shed some light as to what i can do to fix this problem

thanks Huge novice here..

Yep, you need to put oil in the left side (engine side) as well as the clutch side.

Fill it until the oil comes to the top of the sight window, kick the bike over slow to get oil back up thru the motor, then start the bike, after you shut it off you should have the oil close to the middle of the H and L in the window.

Hey Jenkins……you really in Beijing?
Welcome to ATM.

O.K., I have a 04 and a 07 CRF250X. Both bikes take more oil in the trans and the engine.
The manual says .69 liter (690cc) for the engine but requires 760 cc to fill it to the upper line on the dipstick.
The manual says .67 liter (670cc) for the trans (not disassembled) but required 840cc to fill it to the run out
point of the drain bolt hole (where the oil runs out).
My 04 bike has the same situation as needing more oil, maybe a little difference in quantity but not much.

If you poured 700 cc into your engine, start it up (you have enough oil in it to “not” cause any damage) and let it idle for 2-3 minutes. Don’t raise the idle during this part.
Kill the engine and check the engine oil level with the dipstick and chances are you will need more oil (50-100 cc).

Make sure the bike is level when checking both the trans and engine oil.

Remove the oil check bolt, again with the bike level, and fill the trans with trans oil until it starts to run out the bolt hole. Re-install the bolt with a new crush washer and run it.

One more thing, measure your oil as you pour it in and make a note of the volumes, saves time on the next change

Hope this helps.

You can use the same oil, but it can't be "energy conserving". AMSOIL makes a 10W40 you can use in both sides, works out great!!

Also another note the drain pionts for both sides are different the gearbox drain bolt is just below and a little left of the gear shifter and the engine is underneath as per norm

If you havent drained the g/box you could have just poured another 700 odd ccs of oil right on top what was already in there

I use the same oil for both sides but am considering using different oils now

To check the level on the g/box it shoild "weep" out the check hole located on the right side just below and left of the water pump cover

To check the engine side use the dipstick it shoud be about half way between the two marks WITHOUT screwing the dipstick in ie just sitting it in there

Hi, I just got a 08 crf250r and a friend said that these bikes have 3 different oils? gear/crank/head? I know that the 2 gear and crank oils, but I don't have a manual yet and wanted to know about the head? I haven't got the bike yet but I want to change the oil when I get it "probably" Wednesday so I can rip around my track.

You friend is right about 3 different oils only they are engine, trans, and shock oil.
He is wrong on the crank/head part. That oil is the same (engine oil).
I would get a service manual quickly.

I have been researching all evening about it, I'm used to Yamaha, I have never heard of separate oils?? but it does make sense, I'm going to get a manual next week at Honda, I must of misunderstood my friend, he probably meant that the gear/engine, and i thought that the head was seperate too, but what can I run for the gear box? 40w? I'm going to run good oil in the crank/engine part amsoil.
the bike I bought, "it is being shipped to me this week", has a full FMF system, and was wondering off hand if anyone knows roughly what main jet should be?? I'm going to pull the plug when I get it to see how it is..
