Default 02 CRF450 leaking coolant?

Guy's, Ive got a 02 CRF450 here that is leaking a little coolant right near the waterpump. Its below the waterpump coming from a small outlet hole. (see picture) Any idea what could be causing this? core plugs perhaps? coroded waterpump? Does it sound expensive? A mate seems to think its just a coreplug that needs to be replaced... is this a large job on this model? Thanks for any help!

I seem to remember an article about a weep hole on the water pump cover on this model. Maybe one of the Honda guys will clarify.

If you have water coming from the weep hole, the water pump seal is bad. You need to order the seals, bearing and shaft. This was a common problem until the '05 model. In '05 Honda drilled a pressure equalizing hole in the water pump impeller that reduced the pressure on the seal. The new impeller will retro fit to the older bikes as well.

Yep, very common. Order the parts, for your bike, and add an '05 impeller to the list and you'll be set.

Pretty easy job to do by the way, but let us know if you have any questions.

So replace the impeller and washer (left)

and inspect the shaft for wear (right)

got it!

Also check the balancer shaft. The balancer shaft drives the waterpump shaft. I've seen a few balancer shaft bearings go bad and cause the waterpump shaft to move around, which causes the waterpump to leak.

According to the picture, reading from left to right, you should replace anything I have put replace next to: Shaft (replace), Oil seal (replace), spacer, case, Water seal (replace), washer, impeller (replace with '06 model), waterpump cover gasket (replace), and you'll need a new gasket for the side case that you'll take off (it's the big one they show in that picture).

The new impeller wasn't introduced until the 2006 model year, the 2005 still has the (old) impeller without the hole. You can drill your own hole in your existing impeller if you wish, or just order the part. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
