Default 82 Maico 490 GS timing Problems

I have an issue with the timing on my 82 490 Maico GS.
This is an external flywheel motoplat.

The timing method seems simple.

I find TDC with my dial indicator.

Back the flywheel to the desired setting (2mm) and line up the timing holes with a pin.

I keep the stator loose enough so that I can move it, I then pull the flywheel off tighten the stator reinstall the flywheel and recheck the timing.

With this done and if I shoot it with a reliable timing light it appears that the spark is after TDC at least 30 degrees.

The crank was rebuilt so is it possible that the crank end stub is in the wrong position causing the timing to be off.

If not what could cause this?

If so what is a solution to fix it?

Thanks, Bruce

Bruce:

After you time the Maico how does it run? I never have used a timing light to check the timing, just a dial indicator & my all 490's run great!

If it doesn't run right, I would tend to thing that the motoplat is dying & causing problems.

Have you posed this question over on the Maico group?

I does not run, I am getting good spark and it will ocassionally kick back but I think is firing on the down stroke. It did have a weak current coil which I had Vance Smith in Michigan replace. No have have not contact the Maico Group how can they be contacted?
