Default 2-stroke cagiva

1987 Cagiva WMX500 Purchased about three years ago. For 150 I thought it would be a turn and burn, boy was I wrong. It started with fuel in the crank case, gone now , 100's of kicks and still no fire. No manual,no notta. Parts are hard to find in the U.S. Has spark, I cleaned the carb, still had no luck. Started to play with float, now I get 2 or 3 kicks then a backfire. Any advice would be greatley apreaciated.

Ok, here goes
  • check the reeds, if they're chipped or broken you'll have this problem
  • pull the pilot jet and make SURE it's clean
  • check the compression with a tester, less than 100 lbs = bad
  • do you have a fat spark, or a little spark?
  • dribble some gas in the spark plug hole and give it a try, if it fires you definately have a fuel problem
Let us know what's going on and we'll get you running.

Cagivan:

Welcome to the site.

all I can add to Dave's info is it might be timing, I'll see if I can get in touch with my friend in Italy & find you a manual for your WMX 500.

check the magneto- to see if the woodruff key-(moon key) is broken
-compression- if its under 150-re ring it
check the float height-,and turn the carb upside down and blow through a longer fuel line- make sure the floats are shutting off the fuel
it sounds like a bad needle and seat or stuck floats, letting fuel flow into the cyl (yes) -even while its not running-
check all ground wires ,and connections- keep us posted let us know what was wrong-

where you at you wanna sell it?

Back in 86 Cagiva bought the Husqvarna name moved all the manufacturing to Italy in 87, but kept both names for a few years.
I believe the WMX500 was sold both under the Cagiva and Husqvarna name.
Now only street bikes have the name Cagiva and all their dirt bikes are sold under the Husqvarna name.
Husqvarna dealers should be able to order parts for you.
