| The YFZ-450 is quite an amazing machine and it puts out a lot of power just the way it sits stock. What you may not realize, is that the motor for the 450 was a high powered dirt bike motor that changed the world of racing! It was a 4 stroke that could outperform many two strokes! Yamaha built a quad around this motor and put it into the 450 quad. That motor put out around 50 horsepower, and was thought to be too powerful for a quad sold to the general public! Yamaha went to several quad shops and builders, like ALBA, gathered preferences and chose to make a quad with about 40 hp for general public safety. History and accident records found the Quadzilla a major accident producer and it put out easily 50 H.P. They did not want to make another quadzilla, which had to be withdrawn from the market, but they DID want a quad that would win the races! So REVERSIBLE POWER was focused on for the racers who could handle it. Regardless of reason, Yamaha wanted to cut the power back on the 450, so they put a raptor exhaust on it and made it very restrictive (AND QUIET!) the stock 450 is amazingly quiet at 82 decibels, it passes the most stringent noise requirements in every state. To cut backpressure, they just restricted the air filter also and these two changes brought the quad down to about 44 p, still too much! The engineers then decided to change the exhaust cam also and this lost about 5 horsepower, and was just enough for general sale. The quad you buy is a good quad despite the fact the engine is struggling and choking under the restrictions it has, and the jetting had to go so lean to meet ecology specs, that it was quite tuned down. What happened is a very easily upgraded quad that breathes fire if you let it. Caution! Once you remove the restrictions, this quad can be harmful to beginner riders. Also note if you remove baffles and make it noisy you run the risk of aggravating neighbors and people who hate quads to pass even more restrictive laws. So use common sense, if you want to drive up and down your STREET sometimes, please do not remove the baffle! You stand a better chance avoiding trouble if the baffle is left in, because once you remove the baffle, the whole town knows your riding. Get it? Ok, so you are in isolated area such as sand and you want to HAUL! REMOVING THE BAFFLE and AIRBOX lid can damage your motor severely if you do not rejet! Check out REJETTING FOR BEGINNERS at this web site. If you just want a LITTLE FUN and a LITTLE MORE POWER once in a while, it is ok to remove JUST the baffle, plus it sounds cool. This will give you about 2-3 more horsepower, and you should easily beat stock 450's the engine is breathing a bit better. If you also lift the seat and remove the airbox lid you will get 3 more hp also, now you should rejet. Buy the GYTR JET KIT and put the 45 pilot, the 168 MAIN JET in the quad and you should do all right. To do even better follow the jetting instructions for the needle and put the needle on clip #4 or #5. Put the airscrew on 1.5 turns as instructed in the jetting web site. HOW DO I REMOVE THE BAFFLE? EASY. UNDER THE EXHAUST is ONE LONE hex nut, take it out. The baffle will slide out. Well some people CAN't get it out! They write to the forums and say HELP! And we say you arent pulling hard enough! Here is a trick. Take the screw out and start the quad, and let it idle. While it is idling, use pliers with a cloth wrapped around them to remove the baffle. Wiggle and tug and tug and wiggle and turn it counterclockwise, and it will slide out. You will not be covered for sparks, and if you start a fire, and a forest burns down, remember I didn't do it, you'll have to pay the bill! Deal? Be careful. Dont run without a spark arrestor on dry brush. Open sand is pretty safe. HOW MUCH POWER WILL I GET? We have estimated you will get about 70 % of the power of a good pipe, and it is free! Some people have drilled three or four holes at the bottom of the exhaust pipe (inside where the baffle came from look down and there is a dead end wall) they drill 4 1/4 inch holes there and that gives them about 10 - 15 percent more power, in effect a poor mans pipe for free. Plus you can still put your baffle back in and you should be at least less than 96 DB when you go into noise restricted areas. WHAT ABOUT EVEN MORE POWER? The airbox lid? Just remove it but be sure to rejet. WHAT ABOUT EVEN MORE POWER? Ther is something called a cam mod, but you can see that on [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] they walk you through it. Last edited by 2fun; 05-22-2004 at 05:57 AM. |
