Working out--without a gym.

Just wondering what some of you guys do to stay in shape without going to the gym. I have started getting my 230lb butt back in shape. I have been doing push ups, sit ups and crunches. Light running do to the muddy roads where I live. I would like to here some ideas to help me get in shape for harescrambles! Three hours on the bike is a mutha for those first races! I also figured a lot of other people might be motivated by the fact that you dont need to spend money to get in shape. Just look at military basic training. That will get you inshape quicker than anything and no weights. Any work out ideas?? ---------Mike

This may sound stupid since guys don't do arobics, but i'd pick up some arobics tapes/dvd's that use weights in them, and do that daily. I'd also pick up some free weights (the hand type) from walmart. They are pretty cheap, and will enhance what you are doing quite a bit.

Yes nothing gets you in shape for riding better than riding! I have barbells and bench and some dumbbells. The point is that you dont need them! Also what do you guys do for agility? ---Mike

My plan this summer is to mountain bike and do squats, sittups and pushups, every night. i also plan to eat a lot healthier than I have been, like switching from McDonalds to Souplantation and eating an orange instead of cold pizza. Im doing this for soccer so, a motocross workout might be a little diff. , but not by much.

besides what has already been said, stetch before and after exercise!!

the best things that have been said for endurance are running and mountain biking.....try to run at about 70 percent for at least 4 sets of 300 meters every day! and mountain bike a lot..

Also, Drink lots and lots of water!

Skip the soda for the water! Nothing is better than water when you're thirsty!

I have been going to the gym now since Febuary. One thing, I feel alot better overall. One thing though, I have noticed that nothing prepares you for riding, but riding. I road in some very knarly woods over the weekend, and I must say, the work outs help me, but pulling a CRF450 out of deep mud all day is nothing you can prep for at the gym. I guess if I hadnt been working out maybe it could have been worse.

I also have free weights at home we use and ride my mountain bike everyday. I am going to start just riding the 450 alot more now that I have it up and running.

they said they did a test in an mx magazine a few years back on mx riders stamina and fitness. well, on the inclining treadmill(it inclines more every 30 seconds) the leading football players went against the leading mx riders of the time...and guess what? the MXer that lasted the least amount of time lasted 4 minutes longer than the NFL player that lasted the most, and the one that lasted longest lasted something like 5 minutes 30 seconds longer than the leading football player, setting records for the incline treadmill, so nobody can say pro racers arent in good shape!!! and what makes it worse is that the treamill inclines by like 20 degrees every 30 seconds!

There is a new trend in physical fitness called 'core training'. basically, there aren't many weights involved. Almost all of it is stuff like push-ups, with some variations, duck walking, anything that strengthens your trunk. Cardio is also a necessary evil. Treadmill, elyptical machine, bike, etc. I bet if you do a google search you will find plenty of things you can do with out going to the gym.

OH MAN I HATE DUCK WALK!! last year in football we were lifting weights and i got in trouble for throwing a 25 pound medicine ball and coach made me duck walk with a 25 pound medicine ball for about 20 minutes!! and i also had to do situps with the medicine ball on my stomach and other various exercises come to think of it, i should probably do that more, cause i could sure feel the burn the next day!! and if you get a medicine ball, get a 25 pounder, theyre fuuuuun

I highly doubt 20 degree every 30 seconds, it would be standing up at 90 degrees
