Default SEVERED TENDONS

A bit more than five weeks ago, I was in the middle of a dog fight, and the only injury was one i will remember the rest of my life.

The dog was trying to kill another dog thru my arm, ripped and tore half way through to the bone, severed one tendon on the wrist extendor, one ligiment, both muscle bellies and way worse than anything else, shreaded a two inch section of tendon on the ring finger extendor.

This is the slowest healing process I have ever seen. I went to the doctor last week and they tell me still another two months before I can do anything. I have had broken Clavicles (collarbones) four times, two pelvis's, twelve ribs, tail bone, ankle, wrist and several other things not to mention and I have never had to be so patient in all of my life.

Anyone have any simular stories, any doctors suggestions once I get deeper into therapy and is there anything else I can do to speed the healing process. Thanks and look forward to any suggestions.

Cheers, Chris Johnson AMA National MX Sidecar #2, AMA Calif MX Sidecar #1, AMA offroad Sidecar #1

That's a tough one! I severed ligaments in my ankle but one surgery and 10 weeks recovery put me back near 100%. You are looking at 13 weeks if I read it correctly. Being patient during recovery is not one of my strong points so I can't offer much help there. I read a lot of books.
That's some pretty extensive damage you've got. Did they tell you how much dexterity you will lose?

Tendons are hard to heal (not to mention everything else you got going on). I simply bruised or have a small tear in a tendon along my ankle and have been in a walking boot for a month and still not healed.

You're lucky it was'nt worse....could have been you're neck! The soft tissue injuries are the worst and like you mentioned, I'll take a bone break any day over ligaments, tendons or cartilage thrashing.

Hang in there and keep us updated

The blood flow and supply in a ligament or a tendon is very minimal so healing is a long process and it can go wrong very badly. I'd P.M. Dr. Mark and get his opinion on how to approach this. Otherwise listen to the docs.

BTW, Howdy to another D37 rider from Desert Magnum 157, I've followed you on some posts at the off road message board. welcome aboard here too.

Thank you Bill for your suggestions.

How long are you in Florida and do you miss the OL' district desert racing scene, I see you still carry a magnum number - do you still make it out once in a while. I stopped racing desert in the late seventies and went over to moto and GPs on vintage, sidecars and open class bikes until four years ago when I started racing desert on a sidecar - been having a blast ever since - I started racing sidecars in 1984.

I am involved with alot out here - in the ROVERS MC desert club, the number one desert and grand prix club in the district the last three years and I am the chairman for the AMA SoCal MX summer series that kicks off this weekend at Starwest in Southern California.

But it looks like I have to sit the summer MX series out for this year because of my injury, but will be ready for some euro scrambles in September and the next GP in October. Cheers Bill and thanks again, Chris Johnson

Not sure how pertinent this is as I'm only a week and a half into my recovery. I recently broke my kneecap and something also put a large gash in my knee while severing the tendon that goes to my lower leg. I am being told to expect a 12-16 week recovery. Seems about inline with your expected recovery time. I also have bone to heal up, so I don't know if that plays a factor into the length of time?

Wow sorry about your arm. That time seems to be about average for what it takes tendons to heal I beleive. My dad had his achiles(sp) torn but not all the way by a dog, when he was in his early 20's and walked with a crackhead swagger until the day he died because of it. He bred large dogs when I was growing up so I learned from his mistake to never stop a dog fight without a something to defend yourself with. I did stop 2 fights when I had 2 dogs and luckilly I was never hurt.

FREAK DEAL - I was in the middle of two dominant females both byding to be the top alpha female. THOSE BIATCHES. But I didnt even have time to try to break it up - I was literally in the middle of them and one of them tried to kill the other dog thru me.

My eldest boy hit a barbed wire fence when he was 13 and cut his throat almost ear to ear, piece of a paper thickness from the juggler Anyway he got c4 and c5 nerves severerd, but they grafted one of them back together by cutting a nerve out of the bottom of his foot, the end result was about 4 operations, 2 years in and out of hospital and about 70 percent strength in his upper left side shoulder and arm. Doesn't stop him racing a 450 in the expert class at the pointy end, but he does have to do a lot of extra strength training to stay up with them, but he manages just fine. Where there's a will there's a way!
