Default The results are in - OUCH!

The results are in: Torn ACL and meniscus, surgery Dec 21. Then its 5 to 6 month until I can work out at 100% again. In the mean time the doc said to stay off of it as far as Tae Kwoon Do goes.

Where's the Doc? I have a question/choice...To use my hamstring for the graft or to get it from a cadavor. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards using my own tissue.

Sorry to hear it M-dub. Personally, I'd go with the cadaver. I like to keep my own parts at 100% when possible. Just my opinion. Good luck!

Hey M-Dub...sorry to hear about the damage.

I don't know how much Dr. Mark visits here, I know he's fairly active over on houstonmotocross.com and would probably answer any questions you might have over there.

Also, here's an article he's written recently, granted it's bmx, but I think the same principles would still apply:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

There have also been a few members here with that surgery done.

Thanks Char, that was a big help, he suggests live tissue in the article so I think I'll go with his suggestion.

I had a similar injury back in 2000. True recovery times are less than 1/2 of that if you stay off the leg for the first 6 weeks and then do you physical therapy as instructed. Mind you............I was in a cast due to the ligament injury and attachment.

MWV,
It is a different body area but when I had the two bone grafts in my lower spine (L4-L5 and L5-S1) I chose my bone tissue, taken off of my pelvis from the illiac arches on the back side, upper area, right quadrant, over the cadaver bone. The rejection rates are higher even though the bone is pulverized and sterile to the point of being inert. I agree with Dr. Mark and you on this one.

Best of luck with the surgery and recovery, please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Bill

Sorry to hear you have to have surgery Mike. Was that all caused by the crash you told me about? I don't know much about that surgery, but as posted above, people I know have gotten back to normal faster than what they tell you. Keep us informed.

Dude, I can't remember WHERE I slept last night but both hamstrings are still intact.
Sounds like live tissue is the ticket, Mike.

My buddy mxerhale has had 3 knee surgeries and he personally suggests the hammy from your own body. I believe he said it healed faster and he had better luck with it.

Well it is done. Two days ago I had surgery, the Doc said it went perfect so the rest is in my hands. Let me tell you this, BUY KNEE BRACES!!! This is a very painful thing to go through. My back surgery was nothing compared to this. I can not complain though I am up and around on cruches putting some weight on the leg already. Going to try and make it to church in the morning.

Oh I have a funny surgery story for ya, kind of embarrassing. Before they wheeled me into the operating room they drugged me up pretty good to give me some sort of nerve block which was shot into my upper groin area...ooouuuchhh! So after they did that I was still cognisant but very relaxed. They wheeled me into the room and up next to the table. I remember the nurse asking if I could get myself on the table I said sure no problem. I lifted myself up there and ripped one..omg..how embarrassing. The last thing I remember is saying was..oops, sorry. At that point I guess muscle control wasnt working so well.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

Good story but I hate to hear about any type of surgery. I'm glad that it was a success and that you will be up and going soon. Watch out for the Physical Therapist... they can be evil!

Good to hear it went well. Did the doc tell you how long? 2 weeks?

Congrats on getting it done.

MWV,
Really glad to hear the surgery went so well for you. Did you and autologous graft of cadaver tissue? I can't remember from your post but I an interested to know.

Mark, why do you wear a helmet if you don't have a head injury? The braces are worth the money. Most football players, especially the linemen (my former size guys) wear them on both legs no matter. My brother had a work related knee injury requiring extensive arthroscopic surgery, I remember his pain and recovery well. I got knee braces a few years ago and believe in them.

Wild Bill one one reason. Doctor Mark said they can cause the long bone to break, which in turn could cause you to bleed out. The knee is designed to break before anything else in the leg. So I only wear knee pads?shin gaurds

Glad to hear it went well. Good luck on the rehab and keep us up to date. I agree on the knee braces ... my son does not get on the bike without them and they have saved him a few times. I always tell young riders, instead of spending $500 on a new pipe spend it on protective gear! Noone regrets having protective gear on but soooooo many regret not having it!
