Default Recovery Question for Dr. Mark

Dr. Mark,

I have had an Achilles Tendon inflamation. MRI showed no tear so that is good news. I am in a cast for two weeks to keep me from moving my foot too much and allow the inflamation and swelling to go down. I was given Celebrex to take while in the cast. After the cast I am told I will go to a walking boot with a riser in it under my heel to not stress the tendon too much in the beginning of walking again.

My question is what type of exercise and or PT should I do to strengthen this area?

At what point in the recovery should I start the exercises?

As you may know or maybe not I race almost every weekend and would like to get back into the game asap. I also want to be smart and not go back before I should and I want to do what I can to help prevent this from happening again and possibly tearing it next time requiring surgery. Your advice is eagerly awaited. If you have any questions let me know.

Dane

Not trying to speak for Dr. Mark, but I'm guessing his advice would be to get you out of the cast and start some type of PT immediately. Just a hunch....

I don't know about Dr. Mark but I asked Dr. Phil and here's what he said:

Quote:
"Well, Josh, as you know I am not a doctor of medicine but a doctor of the mind. From what I gather DBD's injury isn't severe so my advice would be for him to keep a positive attitude, smile often and perhaps take the time to decorate his cast in order to keep his spirits high. These things, along with plenty of rest, good nutrition and proper physical therapy should help get him back on the bike in no time."
Wow! Looks like you already have it covered!

I would say get a nice easy desk job where you make lots of money, have Friday's off, use of a company vehicle and the monday through thursday hours are 6 am till noon. That will make you feel much better really quickly.

I never would have put you in the cast in the first place. I agree with the antiinflamatories, and would put you on a program to stretch and stengthen the heel cord and its muscles.

I don't see how boxing it up makes any difference.

Do they still have those in America?

Dane, Dr. Mark is right. I had an inflamed shoulder and they put me on Mobic (anti-inflamatory) and then some pretty easy PT at first, then progressed to harder/longer stretches and the muscle stimulator to inhibit muscle strength. Cut that darn boot off and get to a Physical Therapist. Main thing is... get well bro!

Yeah she says that but she has no idea just how much pain I am in when I start whining. I was told once by a doctor that I had a very high tolerence for pain. He knew how much pain was being caused by the injury I had and I didn't complain as much as he thought I should.

Hmmm...and do you still go to that doctor? I wasn't questioning your pain just your patience at being a patient! You are supposed to read my mind on the MEANING of what I say, not the ACTUAL wording.

Well Deb, since he is the king you should make your life secondary to taking care of the man. So, scale back your job back to only 20 hours a week and those 20 hours need to be worked late at night while he asleep. That way you can care of the man you worship, love and adore as you should.

You are so correct Ernie. What the heck was I thinking? I have no business working my normal 60-70 hour work-week. I SHOULD be home taking care of all of Dane's needs. I'm going to march into my bosses office right now, interrupt their high stakes poker game and tell them I have to take a 2 month leave of absence starting 5 minutes ago. Thanks for the suggestion!
