Default Question about hurt knees

My wrist reminded me that I hurt my knee several times (I'm a real mental giant can't ya'll tell?) I've landed pretty hard on my knees several times and gotten what I think is water on the knee. My right one is okay but my left still has water even though it was injured over a year ago. Does anyone know if I can do anything to get this knee healed? As a side note, I do now wear Thor knee protectors but did not at the time I injured my knee.

I've been a catcher in baseball for years, and my knees show it. Every now and then, I'll struggle to walk they'll hurt so bad. I've had X-Rays, etc, done, and the only thing the doctors can tell me is to take Advil when I get pain.

I don't think it's arthritis, but thanks for the advice just in case.

Both my uncle and I have this problem he has had his knocked out of socket a few times and i have mine poping and hurting all the time not sure if its from kick starters or from the shock of landing and using the knee as a shock absorber but all the doctor told him was if it gets worse he will need knee surgery and i am following the same path he took symptom wise so who knows as for knee braces they only help if you hyperextend your knee. the only thing i found for a little help is an ice pack but it doesnt do much good.

Possibly Osgood-Schlatter Disease? I had this really bad when I was slightly younger than I am now. If your active and in the "teen years" it might be possible. Otherwise if it's just swelling then an ice pack is about the only solution short of getting it drained (which I don't recommend unless absolutely necessary or if you're into pain).

I have that in my left knee. It hurts like crazy to kneel and if I hit it.... ouch.

Your doctor should be able to tell you whether it needs to be drained or not. It should go down with some anti inflamatory meds but not always. Good luck with it.

I'm a pretty big mental giant, too. I've sprained my ankle pretty bad a while ago on my BMX bike and that kept me off that foot for quite a while. I don't think I could ever endure a knee injury!
Anyone have any tips on possibly reducing the chances of having all that knee trouble happen to me? I already have a little knee pain every once in a while and I want to make sure I don't make it any worse.

QUICK TIP: Airwalk shoe company sells these little foam sandal/flop flop things and can be found in stores such as WalMart. The foam is really soft and absorbs a suprising amount of shock. When your just chillin' or walking around, I recommend a pair of these. My mom has severe knee problems but ever since she bought these little sandals, her knees have actually been doing better. This is probably because less shock is being transfered to her knee joint. The downside is that I have only see them in pink in the stores (they were aparently intended for women ).
Good luck!

I was wondering just yesterday the same thing. I injured my knees after I crashed my yz pretty hard. I tore the inner ligament in my right knee and something went through my left knee cap. I still get pains at the wierdest times, usually after sitting a bunch.

Will these pains ever go away or am I screwed for life?

The ligaments can heal although not as 'tight' as before causing play in your knee. After being torn in half my MCL (ligament on the inside of the knee) never healed properly so it got the axe in favor of a doner ligament. At the same time my PCL (also torn in half) was removed and replaced with a hamstring graft from the "good" leg. Both healed almost as good as new (98%) after following doctor's orders (most of the time) and many hours of physical therapy.

After the injury the Doc put it this way, knee surgery now, or in a wheel chair/not walking within 3-4 years. My injury was pretty serious though... After that he said the graft only had a 60% chance of success. I gambled I guess and I won. Nine years later and I don't have any substantial pain although they do get a little sore from time to time. After having two surgeries, one on each knee, I am in favor of having a qualified orthopedic surgeon look at my knee(s) and assess the damage...a second and even a third opinion is definately recommended as well. I do have good health insurance too which makes it easier than someone that doesn't, or might not be covered as well.

The other knee was somewhat minor, a loose body (piece of minicus tissue) was floating around and getting caught it the joint causing excessive popping, pain and even a slight dislocation at one point. The piece that they removed was a little larger than a quarter.

Yeah I had my meniscus removed, after a football injury. It sucked but I feel alot better now then when i did before the surgery.
