dont grip the bars too tight. and maybe some softer grips for the vibration. and try stretching out your fingers every now and then to keep the blood flowing to them. i also heard that the underware glove helps.

TENNISBALL and breath more while riding. I would suspect that it goes away after about 30 minutes into the race also. But it suxs for that 30 minutes.

A few things come to mind. First - run the smallest diameter grips you can find. Ouray Pyramid grips are absolutely the smallest on the market but they suck when they get wet. I am currently running a TAG grip that is incredibly similar to the old Pyramid grips but they don't suck when wet. I believe they are half-waffle, medium compound. Small grips help fight fatigue. Second - locate gloves with the minimal amount of padding in the palm area - especially at the thumb/palm intersection. This also helps fight fatigue. I race MX, not hare scrambles, so this suggestion might not work for you, but it's a method to help fight fatigue and it is often overlooked. Third - relax your grip and open your grip completely any chancce you get. In MX, I open my grip completely as soon as I leave the ground, while on smooth terrain and many time as I am entering a corner. Time in the air is usually time to relax. Again - hare scrambles might not offer you much relaxation. Fourth - pop two Tylenol two hours before you ride and start hydrating yourself the night before. Drink lots of water or juice and avoid syrup drinks. I am no doctor, but what you describe sounds like the nerves to your hands are being compressed or blood flow is being restricted. This could be from tendons, but most likely is from muscle inflammation. It might be benificial for you to talk to a sports doctor about this. Scott

Sounds a little like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. I hope that's not the case but it's worth looking into.

I spoke to my Doctor about the same thing, is it just your hands or does it creep up to the arms as well? I was told the inflammation by blood flow causes the Ulnar nerve to go numb. I was told you can go in and remove the tissue around the nerve to help elevate this. My hands go numb every night when I am sleeping and kills me when riding long. Gonna have this done myself soon. Sure would like to know if anyone else has had this though.

I used to suffer from numb hands too. What I discovered was that I was using my arms/hands to hold myself up too much. I needed to hang on with my legs more and not put pressure on my arms to hold myself up. The best thing I did was practice anticipating accelleration and decel. Obviously none of us are the same, but thought I'd throw out what worked for me.
