what ever you do to cool down, dont swallow or chew ice. Your body has to heat up to melt it

It's true. It is actually better on a dehydrated, tired body to drink warm water. It doesn't satisfy as welll, but it does a better job of re-hydrating the body then cold water. It's faster anyway.

What are some ways to keep cool as your riding in the heat? I've camel backs but they are so expensive!

Thanks for anyhelp!
I've found that a good cooler and a case of beer usually helps keep you cool, or too drunk to notice the heat.

There it is! The thread killer we've all been waiting for. Most people offering good advice mixed in with some total nonsense. Ice chest full of beer? Remind me stay clear of the Vancouver, Washington area when you're riding. My cousins live in Vancouver. I was going to go riding up there. Looks like I better reconsider that option.

C'mon LoKi, you were kidding right?

The thread was killed when some ...guy... suggested wearing jeans because they protect you better then riding pants.

Only slightly less ridiculous was his opinion that the jeans also kept you cooler.

Nope, not kidding. When you run out there's plenty of good people around here willing to part with some of theirs.

Why would you want to come up here and ride in beautiful mountainess gods country when you have that lovely desert to ride in anyways?

I bet I've shared a few with your cousins if they ride where I do.

Ok, for the record. I do one water to every beer while riding.

LoKi,

I can barely keep on two wheels sober. Why would I want to risk life and limb for a couple of beers. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Does everybody else drink WHILE riding?

Just keep riding, don't slow down unless you are doing it for a drink....drink a lotta gatorade cuz it has electrolytes that will help keep you more hydrated

i think u also need to condition yourself to be in hot weather .i do construction so iam outside everyday ,ive found if i sit inside in the a/c for a few days and then go riding i feel like iam in a blast furnace .you also need to hydrate the day and night before by drinking alot of water .i took my camel back and ziptyed it to my chestprotector and fill it about 1/3 full of ice and i can go for about four hours at 100 + degrees and when iam remote areas i always bring someone else

ok seriously, if your gonna ride in "extreme heat" 90-110 degrees
120 oz of water should last you about 2 hours..if not less. I train in the summer out here and have seen many people dehydrate themselves. If you prefer gaterade dilute it 1 to 1. The sugar in gatorade will do a number on you and can give you the "shakes". Dont wear shorts as your legs absorb the heat off the engine or radiators. wear the thinnest jersey you have or get some vented gear. Moose makes the best (IMO) vented gear called sahara. Kinda pricey but worth the money. Always always ride with at least one other person. I zip tie my mouth piece to my chest protector which helps while your riding. If your gonna stop look for some type of shade. Ask around this site from the desert riders/racers for more advice if needed. there are many ways to ride in the heat but be careful there are way to many stories of riders/racers who have lost thier lives doing what they love. Good luck and if your ever down in the indio area let me know we'll go for a ride.
