| I broke both my legs: Drew778 has been hospitalized or just the vid and pics: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] ![]() ![]() ![]() I was told for the right leg partial pressure for 4 weeks (broke the tib and fib above the ankle and got a rod with screws down the leg and a plate with more screws) for the left no pressure at all for 2-3 months ( shattlered the tib and fib at the ball going into the ankle, had plates and screws put in) I never got to see the X-ray, I have a follow up an Tuesday and try to get some. My question is there any thing I can do to speed things up just to walk not ride? |

| Nice video. you can't be partial weight bearing on one leg, and non weight bearing on the other. That means you have to be in a wheelchair. All the lawyers know that someone needs at least "one leg to stand on" Post the X-rays |

I can't get until Tuesday, until then, should I try to get out in about or lay on the couch and keep my legs elevated? I try to move my toes as much as posible and lift my legs here and there. Any type of food to eat or pills to take to help things along? I haven't been eating a lot lately, should I force myseft eat more? Thanks again |

| Hey Drew I'm Joe Of CBMX (Christian Brothers MX). I am so sorry to hear about your injury. I know it's hard to be off your feet, especially for us active types. Hang in there as you know it is a long process but you will get there. One big thing that helped me was prayer. My prayers and all my friends here and at home. You go thru a lot of ups and downs wondering if/when you can walk, run, ride...again. You will, it just takes time and patience and prayer. Next Getting thru the 1st 10-12 days of pain is the worst. I don't like vicadin so I just took over the counter stuff. Once you get thru those days and some of the meds start to get out of your system and get a hard cast and all you start to sleep and figure out ways to do things and it gets easier on you. I put this behind me and vowed not to bring it up anymore unless it is to help someone but for background, I broke my right tib/fib last May in 5 places and had a titanium rod inserted thru the tib top to bottom and screws at knee and ankle. My bones healed 4 weeks early (17 weeks instead of 21). I broke the leg hi and low but not a plateau fracture on the ends like yours so I am similar but not exactly the same. I can jog now about every other day with minimal pain and ride etc. I limp just a little but am still improving strength and flexability even 10 months later. Now, to answer your question: The main things I did nutritionally were: take a calcium and vit. D supplement daily, drink a protein shake daily, they make these in soy if lactose is an issue, I used whey protein or Met-RX which is great, I took a multi vitamin and extra 500 vit.C, and Glucosamine for my joints. I also tried to eat some calcium like yogurt , milk, cheese. I did not start the glucosamine right away until I started putting weight on it at 12 weeks. It would hurt but atleast I could move around some without crutches. At 6 weeks I started going real easy on a exercise bike. when I get sore I ice down the knee and ankle for about 20 minutes. It sounds simple but is very effective in reducing pain and swelling after use. WHen you get to that point, do your rehab and stay with it. The trama you suffered effects things like nerves and muscles too and they will be slower to respond thatn you might think. Just stay with it and don't give up because they continue to improve over a very long period of time. I was told it could take a year or 2 to be 100% without pain and I am finding it is true. I thougfht now way I been training with weights and running and playing sports for years and I'm going to bounce back by traing really hard. Well it helps but you can't force this part. It takes time. Keep your chin up. WHen you feel bummed know you are not alone. We are here for you and praying for you. PM me anytime I can help. Hope this did. I had so many questions and things i did not think of. God Bless, Joe Last edited by joe346CBMX; 04-01-2007 at 07:12 AM. |

For the most part I agree with Joe. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reccommends a hgh protien diet and 1500mg of calcium every day. A great way to get high protein, vit. D, and calcium is to eat what ever you want, and drink six 8 ounce glasses of milk every day in addition. We also start our patients on the glucosamine stuff right away. We tell them to visit [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and order Nutriex Sport. We tell our patients to elevate their legs so that the feet are 8 inches above the heart. Use a ruler to be sure, too much elevation cuts of the circulation. Post the X-rays on Tuesday. |

| Drew, I thought of a couple more things I should tell you that the doc did not recommend the exercise bike at 6 weeks. I am pretty in tune with my body after many many years of exercise and nutrition study and experimentation. I know good soreness from bad pain and acted accordingly. I had an exercise bike then that I could use both my arms and legs on, a dual action cycle, I borrowed at the time and I only had one leg broken so I used it spairingly until I got stronger. It just helped me get some movement without much weight bearing and get some exercise because it was hard for me sitting around a lot and being on crutches. I beleive it also increased blood flow to that area which aided healing. It sounds like you have to be more careful based on some of your breaks being at the end of the bone, which from what I studied is a plateau fracture. I like Met-RX because it was developed by Dr. SCott Connely a surgeon, who originally created it to help patients in recovery. Then body builders and athletes found out about it and it became marketed as a hi nutrient low calorie mrp/supplement. I have tried lots of them but nothing has worked as well for me as it has. I use it now after workouts. (I sold supplements for a while.) best wishes. Joe |

| Hey drew you are welcome. Best wishes on a speedy recovery. tip when you get tired of the choc. met-rx the vanilla is good too and you can throw in some fruit now and then for a change of pace. It's pretty thick so I often split the packet in half and take it twice a day. take care, Joe |

| WOW...despite what you are thinking right now you are a lucky man. If the bike had plowed you the results may have been much worse. Keep your chin up and listen to what the Docs tell you. You're a pretty young man and you should heal up well. |

| OK, I'm pretty upset now, I was supposed to get X-rays today, but my Dr. office was really busy (Now X-rays are supposed to be taken in a month) So, all he did was look at my legs, he said I heel really well and I can put weight on my right leg with out the walking boot. I asked about theropy, he said I didn't need any just do what I can to exercise!!! WTF I looked into another Doctor, but I was told I have to stay with this doctor for 3 months or insurance won't cover me!!! I'm at a lost for words and what to do already |

We're going to call tomorrow and ask why no theropy and then I'm going to see a Physiatrist and see what they can do to help. My doctor now, I don't know if he thinks he's just that good or what, I'm pretty much in the dark right now. I need to get out of this damn wheel chair and out and about, I'm starting to go CRAZY!!! |

| I never heard of an insurance plan that forces you to stay with a doctor in whom you don't have any confidence. I would go in there and demand copies of the X-rays. He'll give them to you. |
