THe best way to stay in shape in my train of thought is to ride as much as you can,and eat right.

I would concentrate on endurance training.......lots of cardio.......Probably most importantly stay away from the cigarettes.

Ride, Cardio, Ride, Ride somemore and when you do ride, ride stuff you wouldn't normally choose to ride if you were riding with friends on a trail ride. Ride the tough stuff ride the nasty stuff and then.................ride it again.

Thats my thoughts on training.

I went from MX to XC this past season. The races are 1.5 hours long. The first few just about killed me! I finally learned how to breath late in the season. It's more important than you think. Ride relaxed and breath all the way down into your diaphragm.
Riding is pretty much the only training I do; once or twice a week in between races. Our winter series races are going to be 2 hours in length but I ain't skeerd. The little things like breathing properly and staying relaxed will take you much further than weight training. I'm not saying the weights won't help. But no amount of weight training will make up for improper breathing.

lifting weights builds strength, not stamina. riding a bicycle or running, jump rope, stuff like that will build stamina.

Boxing or even better would be kick boxing. Not only will it help build stamina, but also much agility.

i've been an aerobics instructor for the last 6 years. if you dont want to do the classes, best bet would be anything!

consult a physician / personal trainer *certified* prior.

first 10 min warmup, then start to hammer to the point you fall over after 15 minutes. relax a little for 3 min *but keep going*, then hammer for 20 min. repeat and increase times.

I dont know what weight program you are on, but I hope it is a supervised one by someone who is qualified and knows your goals. Mountain biking would be my first choice for the cardio and the practice of picking lines. You might be surprised at how close some of it can be. Riding is a good exercise in itself, especially if you can afford a practice bike. If not, don't wear out the racer practicing if you are looking for results. wear out the 200 dollar mountain bike instead.

Diet is very important for anyone your age. There are books, but most cities have affordable dieticians who can be more helpful. There is one place you cant really go wrong though: No white bread and very little sweets. Think yellow vegetables, green vegetables, lean dairy, and lean meat. Fish of about any kind (other than shellfish). Oranges work good for me for race day snacks. Carrots too. I don't like to eat anything for about 2.5 hours before a race. It has a safety aspect too. (get knocked unconcious it is nice not to be puking into your lungs.)
