DrMark I have a couple questions that you may be able to answer. Sorry if my typing gets mispelled or have errors. I can only use my left hand due to a scaphoid fracture. I saw the hand specialist today for the first time since the accident. He recommended a full arm cast to get the best sucess rate. Is this true because Im finding it much harder to do anything? Okay last question. My back has been going out of place alot since the age of 20. I used to go into the chiro and get adjusted and it would be fine the next day. The last year or so I figured out how to crack it myself and found that it would feel better within a couple hours and wouldnt go out as much. After my accident last week where I fractured my scaphoid I felt a slight pinchin my back so I go to the chiro before it gets worse. Well he cracked me and now I can hardly walk. Im all slouched over and the muscles get tight. Im seeing a back specialist tomorrow and wondered about some questions I should ask. My father says both him and his brother are missing their "scottish dogears" or so he calls them, where they had to fuse two vertabrae together to solve the problem. Is there some other term for this? Last time I saw a doctor for a back problem I asked this question and I got a blank stare. The back problem is also causing a backed up tract if you know what i mean Sorry this was so long, took me about half hour to type it

For a young healthy person, you'd be best to have that scafoid bone fixed. Its minor surgery and afterward all you will need is a simple wrist brace. As far as your back is concerned, many people have that scotty dog thing. It medical name is sponlylolysis. If the top vertebrae is not sliding off the bottom one, you should be on an exercise program and take 4 advil 4 times per day. Surgery for that is rarely indicated. I would like to see an x-ray of your wrist. Perhaps you should buy a SWA ticket and come to Houston for two days. You will return with your wrist fixed and won't need to come back here afterward.

Thx drmark, that is by far the best answers I've gotten. Straight to the point and will be my plan. My current doctor offered surgery, but scared me off when he said "BUT there is chance of nerve damage, etc..infection. Ill take your advice and get the surgery done. Then maybe I can ride this winter As far as my back problem Im going to go see the specialist, but I think I may have figured it out. I drank some Magnesium Cirate as my dad instucted. Amazing my back feels great now. Last edited by Crazy; 10-04-2005 at 07:02 PM.

Infections occure in far less than one percent of cases. Nerve damage? One would have to purposfully screw the whole thing up to damage any nerves. Maybe you should find a doctor who is sure of his/her abilities. Maybe he/she knows something about him/her self that we don't.

Alright thx. I'll call down to the University of Iowa , or up to Mayo clinic and find who has the most experience. I'd love to come down there to have the procedure done by you, but I have no vacation, and they wont give me leave. I'll have to find someone around here to do it. I'm guessing Mayo or UofI would be experienced in doing this procedure. Do you think because UofI is largly into sports they've probably had alot of practice?

At least to me, this isn't rocket science. In fact, even rocket science isn't rocket science. Can you drive to the Mayo Clinic? If you have to fly, fly to Texas. We alot more user friendly.

Ya Mayo Clinic is 3 hour drive whereas UofI is 15 minutes. I saw the back guy and he said it was just a sprained disk. I went in to the hand guy and asked them to remove the section of cast from my forearm to the middle of my bicep. They said they couldnt because the doc wasnt there. I smiled and said, "NP I have a dremel cut-off tool." HAHA the nurse freeked.

I have one for you Dr Mark. I had a bad crash a few years ago and broke two transverse processes off of my L1 & L2 vertabre. They looked like broken tree limbs at almost 90 degrees from straight. I went to my family doctor after the x-rays and CT scan because the ER doc said there wasn't much to do other than rest and don't bend over much. My question is, after all these years, I still get pretty sore down there after a hard ride and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help stop the acheing or is it something I will just have to live with? Thanks for your help. P.S. I am guessing more people aren't posting because they feel that free advise from a doc just doesn't seem right! I didn't want to seem like I was freeloading at first but then here you are asking for more. You are one heck of a man! I met you 2 years ago at a race but you probably don't remember me. It was at Splendora and I was with Big M and Vintage dave.

Yes, I do remember you. I met you with Big Macio. He and I have become good friends. Unfortunately, some residual back pain is common after transverse process fractures. I would reccommend that you maintain your all ready satisfactory level of CV fittness and take four Advil before a ride. I have no problem answering questions for free as long as I don't have to dictate a letter to work comp, an insurance company, or a lawyer. It gets me away from the refrigerator and is an excellent tool for making friends, getting your name around, and practice building. Mrs. Twister, when you come to the office you will find that the rumor of us having MX mags in the waiting room is true. 911 Racing Dad, if you prevail with the feds, I will be happy to help out your boy. All of our guys who had their shoulders fixed are racing by three months.

Machoman, I thought you lived in Htown. Well, how long ago was that bad get off? If it has been over a week, I would maintain my cardio on a stationary bike, one hour per day every day, and take 4 Advil, 4 times per day. A good deep tissue massage would help if such is available near where you are. mark
