Back hasnt been the same..Anyways, good posture, and back excercising realllly helps! In strength trainging, we did back excercises and my back hasnt hurt really since, till lately cause I havent dont anything. Good luck, and pull through. | Good luck and hope you recover soon DirtyDar. as others have said definately get a second and even third opinion, and don't give up hope just yet. Especially being as young as you are, you should have many productive riding years ahead of you once you get through this. The back is a funny thing, once you jack it up it's never the same. I pulled my back really bad at the gym about 8 years ago and it took about three months for the pain to go away. To this day it gives out on me easier than before that incident. But I have noticed that strength training does seem to help so when you get to that point try and strengthen your back muscles, ligaments and tendons. Try and keep a positive frame of mind too, as where the mind leads, the body will follow. If you tell yourself this is the end of the world, then it may very well be. If however you tell yourself you will do whatever it takes to lick this thing and get back in shape and start riding again, well that is exactly what will happen. It's called a self fulfilling prophecy, and only you can decide which way you want it to go. We will be pulling for you though, as you can see. |

I think i'll buy a kidney/back belt now! I have been riding without one, and a few months ago I strained my back a little when casing a double. Now every time i get a muscle pain in my back when I ride. I have started stretching my back out real good before a ride and it helps a ton. I would stretch as much as possible if I were you!

O man, casing a double anymore sucks! I can like feel my bike compress almost, nothing serious but its almost like g-forces. I wanna get a chest protector first, then a new helemt, and then a kidney belt. I have a kidney belt, but its too small...

I hope the doctors are wrong...and I definitely think you should get at least one other opinion, maybe more. I'm sure it must seem hard, but try to keep a positive attitude. I honestly beleive that our attitude really affects how quickly we heal or how easily our body will respond to treatment. Please let us know how things are going...you will be in my thoughts.

POSTURE.......POSTURE.......POSTURE. I was trained as a postural therapist just last year. I have had numerous bouts with back pain throughout my life. I was told by numerous surgeons that I just had to HAVE back surgery. I found that the more I improved my posture the less pain I had in my back and other joints. Every human body has the same design. Joints need to be alligned and loaded properly to function correctly. There are many exercises you can do to fix your posture and eliminate your back pain. My back was killing me at age 20 and now it doesn't hurt at all at age 42 with even more demand put on it. In fact, I'm about to hit some 12 foot surf right after I post this. Cowabunga and Good Luck. BTW, the postural therapy I was trained in is called Egoscue and can be found on the web at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

thankyou Bill for the emails, its really picked me up. I found out that discitus is a minor infection of the spine. My auntie is a registered nurse and she said that when the xrays and scans were taken with that infection it can make the gaps in the discs and hotspots apear different to what they already are. she said that it is a possibility once the infection is cleared i could have no pain at all. im just thinking positive and im on some painkillers and i can move around normally now. thanks for all the heartwarming support guys it wont go unforgotten.

Good news my friend You need to get the infection totally cleared out and concentrate on strengthening the back and abdominal muscles. I take a supplement and mega-vitamins that work to strengthen your ligaments and fibrous tissues like the disk covering. Find a good back belt like the Thor I use or maybe sixsixone. There are several manufacturers out there and these things are worth the slight cost. I will stay in touch with you as we overcome these problemws together. We have several Australian members that you should stay in touch with. Thumper Talk has a lot of Aussie guys also. Keep your spirits up and let your mum know that you are doing everything to make you riding and skating safe. I am always here for you to talk with. Regards, Bill

i'll echo most of these replies: i used to sell a patch for chronic back pain, so was trained on alternative treatments and outcomes. back surgery RARELY fixes the problem, altho i'm not sure about a "worn" disk. seems contradictory for the md to call it "diskitis" (a b/s term meaning 'inflammation of the disk'.. uhh no kidding?!) specific back strengthing exercises provide more benefits than pills, surgery, braces. just make sure you get a professional recommendation on just what exercises to do... some can lead to more damage (ie: nerve). also keep in mind that many folks starting these exercises need some kind of pain control agent initially.. but with continued exercise often dont need them anymore once the support muscles are up to the job. i'm sure you'll do fine. just dont jump back into the hardcore stuff as soon as you're feeling better. at that time, keep doing the exercises and consider additional support if you're gonna be railin'. glucosamine might provide additional benefits in the way of cartilage health. some people also find glucosamine relieves pain. a low-dose aspirin for controlling inflammation might help.
